Hey all,

I got a cube for Christmas just as a house present, well it's taken a hold to say the least, I now have 4 3x3's nothing expensive and a 5x5 that just scares me.

I learned the beginner method of CFOP, then started learning f2l with a goal of sub 1min. I failed I felt swamped to much to learn, I just wasn't getting it.

I then stubbled upon roux, roux seems more up my street I struggle to take in information so trying to learn lots of algs just frustrats me to much.

I've learned the basics of roux and now I want some form of a plan, an idea of what is best to learn first.

any help on learning notation would be a massive help as well. (it really isn't sinking in so just scrambling my cube with an app is frustrating)

thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums! Notation is simple, here's how it works

L stands for the Left side
R stands for the Right side
F stands for the Front side
B stands for the Back side
U stands for the Up(top) side
D stands for the Down(bottom) side

If you see a letter by itself, you turn that side 90 degrees clockwise(so one clockwise turn). If the letter is followed by an apostrophe ('), then you do a 90 degree counterclockwise turn(so one counterclockwise turn). If the letter is followed by a 2, then you do a 180 degree turn of that side(two turns)

That's pretty much it. You may have trouble turning them the wrong way at first, but try looking at that side and imagining a clock face and which way it would turn

Roux is not a great method to use if you ever plan on solving big cubes, it has been proved many times that it just flat out stinks for 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7. If you only want to learn 3x3, do whichever method is fun for you. But if you plan on doing big cubes I would recommend learning CFOP.

PS if you don't want to learn algs Petrus is a great method to learn as you only need 2 algorithms.

I'm always re gripping I think is my problem so D' isn't always right ring finger for example.

U and R I'm fine with, L I have to think about as it backwards to R and I'm ok with M as Im learnin some EO cases, F B D not do good with

Is there a way everyone does it? Like a standard grip and finger per letter?

Typically the way it's learning is doing a clockwise or counterclockwise turn of the face, not a normal grip or finger, because during a solve your fingers won't always be in the same spot, so it's hard to refer to a system like that

So it is more a case of reputation will ingrain it?

Yeah, once you've done some solves, it will just be second nature. It won't take long at all either, within a week or two after learning how to solve the cube I could do all my turns fine. For now you'll probably have to think a lot about which way a turn goes, but soon it will just be natural
