One-Answer WCA Competition and Regulations Question Thread

I was stalking my upcoming competition's registration list as I always do when I noticed one person (Stachu) is signed up for... nothing. You can see here for yourself: https://www.cubingusa.com/Cube4Cam/competitors.php

Does this mean when he shows up to the competition, he won't be allowed to compete in any event? What's the point of even signing up then? (This isn't a free competition after all)

Stachu is the organizer, so when Keaton created the CubingUSA site, it added Stachu and Keaton, but without adding any events. Seeing as he's the organizer, I doubt there'll be any issues with him competing :p

That being said, if you're reading this Stachu, you should probably add the events you'll do so that's it's included in your worksheet.

Thanks, that makes a lot more sense now

If a Clock face doesn't point exactly to 12, is it comp legal to put a mark on the face to indicate where it's supposed to point?
3h4) For Clock, custom "inserts" (the same shape and size as the traditional paper inserts) are permitted, at the discretion of the WCA Delegate. The inserts must have a clear indication of 12 o'clock that matches the original inserts.

That's not quite what I was asking about. If the pic is here (not sure how to properly post a pic), look at the bottom left corner face. Is it allowed to make a mark like that on the face?

I would say the regulation quite clearly does cover this case. It says you're not allowed to change 12 o clock to another position.

My advice is to take your clock apart and have a look at why it doesn't line up properly.

Yes, normally it helps to simply take it apart and put it together again. I had this problem more than once and it was easy to fix.

Regarding the regulations: in fact, your Clock does not have a solved state anymore as it is not possible to align each of the inner clocks to 12 o'clock. However, everyone knows that Rubik's Clocks are old and are not always in the best condition, so if you cannot fix it, talk to your Delegate.

Or WCA could just remove the event as they did with Magic because clock is not a twisty puzzle ;) But I'm getting off topic here. Just wondering why it still is a WCA event, that's all. It's not my intention to bother anyone that likes clock. If I did, I apologize.

This will never happen if people just keep writing rants about Clock whenever they can and not compile a complete and comprehensive proposal.

Sorry, my comment was not a rant, it was just intended as a funny comment, probably I failed at that. I have never been to a competition, nor I am involved with WCA in any active role. I'm just a speedcuber that enjoys twisty puzzles and does not even have a clock. I have not bought one because it does not look enjoyable for me to solve but I own and solve many twisty puzzles that are not WCA official either like 3x3 shapemods, etc. Clock being a WCA event does not bother me at all and, again, I apologize if I bothered anyone or just made you waste a couple minutes of your time reading my useless post. Cheers!

I wouldn't be changing 12 o'clock to another position. It would still be at 12 o'clock. The only regulation I see regarding that is the one cubizh quoted that says custom inserts must have clear indication of 12 o'clock that matches original puzzle. I'm not wanting to change the inserts (yet).

There is this--
10h1) The solved state of Clock is achieved when all eighteen inner clock faces point to 12 o'clock.

which is what Laura O was referring to that would technically make my clock unsolvable. Mine isn't quite as bad as the pic. It fluctuates between being just a bit right of 12 and being where it is in the pic. It's bad enough to cause occasional DNF's. At a comp, I'd be safe and start on the side with the bad corner every time so I solve corners on the good side, but then I'd be losing some time when I have to adjust pins.

This is the closest regulation to what I'm wanting to do that I could find
3h) Modifications that enhance the basic concept of a puzzle are not permitted. Modified versions of puzzles are permitted only if the modification does not make any additional information available to the competitor (e.g. orientation or identity of pieces), compared to an unmodified version of the same puzzle.

It's not enhancing the basic concept. It makes additional information available compared to an unmodified version of MY puzzle but not of the same puzzle in general. I thought it would be allowed, but it seems to be no so far.

It's taken apart right now and I don't see how to fix it unless the face comes apart from the cog that it seems to be glued to. Maybe with some force, but I'm afraid of breaking it.

Or WCA could just remove the event as they did with Magic because clock is not a twisty puzzle ;)
Nooooo, we need more clock events. OH clock, clock with feet, clock bld, clock mbld:)

Yes.

  • A4e) Time penalties for starting the solve are cumulative.
  • A6i) Time penalties for stopping the solve are cumulative.
  • A7b1) If penalties are assigned, the judge records the original recorded time displayed on the timer, along with any penalties. The format should be "X + T + Y = F", where X represents the sum of time penalties before/starting the solve, T represents the time displayed on the timer (the "original recorded time"), Y represents a sum of time penalties during/after the solve, and F represents the final result (e.g. 2 + 17.65 + 2 = 21.65). If X and/or Y is 0, the 0 terms are omitted (e.g. 17.65 + 2 = 19.65).
