Oh boy, this is too funny. I also came to ask about my first block. Is planning how to make a 1x2x2 block, knowing where the edge will be and tracking the final corner as you solve it good? Or should I really aim to get the whole block planned out?

The whole block. But don't stop there. Track the next block too. And while you're at you might as well predict CMLL orientation.

your FB is approximately the same speed as your second block; in this video it is probably even slower. spend more time to planning your first block as well as decrease cube rotations during first block.
Yeah, first block efficiency is a problem, especially the first 1x2x2. I think I'll take a look at JARCS and do some other stuff to practise that. I'll also take a bit more time in the example solve game too to think of better first block solutions.

Meh idk if I'll switch. The FR way feels more natural, but maybe that's just because I'm used to it. Might as well try it though. Doing OH to give my dominant hand a break after writing tons of essays for finals :/

yeah, it's easier to apply more friction with the FR because you're basically pushing down on it. It's just harder to do LSE lookahead with it. I would have to either keep my head low to look at the bottom or lift up the cube to see the bottom.

Yeah I have a bad habit of lifting the cube some during LSE. I've gotten a bit better at avoiding that though.

anyway, what's japanese style again?

Basically doing flicks on turns, especially U (or U' for a lefty). Most people do something like this:
R: pinky flick from BDR
R': pinky flick from FDR
U: index flick from FUL
U': index flick from BUL

Some people use their ring instead of pinky and still consider it Japanese style. A more old school style ("Western" maybe) is the Ryan Patricio way, with U as an index push and R' as the index pull. Not sure if anyone fast these days uses this.

I follow those a lot but with the added move set in roux it helps to deviate a bit. Here's what I do in addition to what's above:
Rw: ring finger flick from BD edge
Rw': Index from BU edge (pulling down)
R: occasional ring finger flick
R': occasional Index pull from BUR

If I want to do anything else I just rotate.

it seems better to push for Rw' because you index finger will not be overworked. you can't to Rw' U your way that fast.
