[Help Thread] ZZ and ZB Discussion

I finished the page for a non-matching LL. This makes it easier to take advantage of lucky blocks and recognize the last layer. For the first step, find the orientation of the L/R corner stickers (orange/red if you use blue on F) and the location of the L/R edges. The second step finishes the rest. I'm not so good with HTML so I did what I could with Google's editor. There may be some mistakes that I didn't notice.

Wow, I've never heard of nmll before! Looks interesting. Could you break down the advantages/disadvantages compared to OLL/PLL?

Also, here are some "Permute" algs that I prefer:
T FB/LL C/O: R U R' U' R' U L' U2 R U' R' U2 R2 L U' R'
T FB/LL O/C: r' U r' U2 l U' l' U2 r2 B'
T FF/LR C/C: F' U R U' L2 U R' U' L2 F
U FF/BB O/C: (U' L) U2 (R' U R) (L' U' L) U2 (R' U) L' (U R)
U FF/BB C/O: R U' R' U L' U2 L U2 R U' L' U2 R' U' L

+ All block types can be used and have an LL that can be recognized more easily.
+ Fewer moves than OCLL + PLL.
+ Phasing can still be used and cuts the number of Separation cases to 14.

- Ten more cases than COLL + EPLL. Though most already know and would be able to recognize at least six of these.
- More moves than COLL + EPLL.

Thanks for the sequences. I had considered F'URU'L2UR'U'L2F (mirror of another case) but I was able to perform the RUD version faster. It would help with learning though.

Ah.. I had almost forgotten this thread existed.

Here's a nice ZZ based fewest moves solution:

scramble: L2 F2 D2 R' F' U L B' D' U' B L' R' F' L2 B' R' B'

D U' B R' F' makes EO 5
D' U' makes Eline + first block 7
B2 L2 B2 makes 2nd block 10 (funny note: making the block via U* L* moves) gives the same ending)
R' U' L' makes pseudo F2L-slot 13
R' U R pair 16
U2 R' : U' . R' leaves 4 corners of which one twisted 20

at . insert U B' D B U' B' D' B to move the twisted and solve one corner, cancel 2 moves 26
at : insert R D L' D' R2 D L D' R to to cancel 2 moves 33

final solution:
D U' B R' F' D' U' B2 L2 B2 R' U' L' R' U R U2 D L' D' R2 D L D' R B' D B U' B' D' B R'

Crappy insertions though...

Same number of moves for me, but slightly different alg: R U R' U2 R U' R' U R U' R'

Although the RU versions are 4-moves more they are really nice to execute. R moves no more than 90º, so they can be executed from two possible grip positions.

@novice nice F2L-1 :tu

nmll - I don't get it. Please explain more

The first step moves all colors, that match the L and R center, to opposite ends of the U layer. The second step permutes along the L/M/R layers. It's difficult to explain through words.

Scramble with Yellow U and Blue F - R2 U R2 B' U' R2 U R2 B U R2 U' R2 U'

1. Look at the corners and find the orientation of the Orange and Red colors. It's a T case at BUL, UBR, FLU, and URF. Then find the orange and red edges. They are at UB and UL. So, solve this case with U M'B'RBr'U2R'U2R.
2. Now all of the orange and red colors are on "opposite layers" facing away from the U center. Just need to permute the rest with U x R2D2RU2R'D2RU2R.

Scramble with Yellow U, Blue F - L' U' L2 U L2 U L2 U2 L2 U2 L U2

1. The orientation of the orange and red corners is an antisune at LBU, UBR, FLU, and RFU. The orange and red edges are at UB and UR. Solve this case with U' L'U2LU2RU'L'UM'.
2. Permute the rest with U' FU'L'UR2U'LUR2F' U.

Also, I have moved the information to a new page.

how does NMLL recognition works?

You first find the orientation of the L/R colors on the corners (which would be orange and red if you use the standard ZZ Yellow U, Blue F cube orientation) and locate the L/R edges (again, orange and red). The edges can be easily found during insertion of the final F2L pair.

In the next step, you look at the ratio of orange to red stickers on each side and whether the colors around them are matching or opposite. I think this step can always be recognized using just U, F, and R, no cube tilts or AUF.

Yeah. Phasing can be used now to reduce the memorization (to only 28 cases). Then later, the rest can be gradually learned if you tire of phasing.

I tested every COLL sequence I knew to see what effect they had on corner orientation and edge location.

Can't believe I hadn't noticed. Thanks. And thanks for the nice sequence.

Now I wonder if there are others...

From that page, I think I like xUR'URU'lU2l'UR'U'RU' more.

Added the missing case to the page.

but if i do: R F (R U R' U')*3 F' R'
i would do R so i have a pseudoblock and then i have the colors already separated, but how should i recognize permutation?
