[Help Thread] Petrus Discussion and Help thread

I've thrown around similar stats before but from my logs the date with my first sub 23 Average of 12 happened on 11-22-08, and the date of my first sub 20 average of 12 happened on 1-9-09. I didn't consistently average below 20 until February.

Edit: 23 seems like an odd plateau to use....How about first sub 25 average happened on 11-4-08

hey, i just uploaded an avg5, would anybody like to offer some tips on how to improve? i know there´s a lot, but maybe i could focus on something in particular.
here´s the link
thanks in advance!

Slow down your 2x2 block and start working on minimizing the delay between 2x2 and 2x2x3. Start to plan the entire 2x2 in advance and track at least a corner for 2x2x3, more on easy scrambles. Work on making your expansion as efficient as possible, and learn to do it from many different angles and grips. This will help your solutions be more efficient than having a fixed grip / orientation for the 2x2 block and will give you more options for how you expand. Finish learning COLL and practice. You've got potential. =] Best of luck.

thank you for your response!! i´ll keep those tips on mind.
i jsut got back from a short weekend vacation, and i now have to study.. anyway, i started learning Ls last week, and it´s getting a bit hard to speed up recognition. next week, i´ll see if i can give a look at Pi´s, after the exam!
and it´s true, i have to work hard on my expansion... isn´t it the harder step??
i´ll post again when i get any improvements!

PS: do you have any slowmo solves on youtube? it´s really usefull to watch great solvers to grasp those things you say about the grips and the expansions =)

i average 35~ Seconds with petrus, need suggestions and tips for building the 2x2x2 and then expanding that to a 2x2x3
at the moment these steps take me over 10-15 seconds of the solve...
ive read lars' website and although it does explain the block building,
i just find it difficult to come up with good blocks, especially on solves where the 2x2x1 isn't all that obvious
whenever i get a scramble which doesn't have 2 pieces already paired i tend to go for the RWB corner, and not look around for better ones

i think what would help me the most would be a dozen or so 2x2x2-2x2x3 block examples,
or a few super slow mo solves with comentary on what you are looking at and what your thinking.
any help you can will be great

I use petrus since I began solving 3x3.
well I modified a bit of the real petrus to suit my own taste (I don't orientate edges on step 3 and I use 2 look LL), but I still use 2x2x2, 2x2x3 and additional 2x2x1 block on the F2L.
I average 16-17 seconds although it has been 3.5 years since I first cubed.

it´s true. at first it seems a loss of time, however, then it opens ur way to a new world (!) once u´ve mastered it, (which i haven´t) u´ll start dropping ur time =) anyway, whenever i do fridrich, i do that as well ^^ hate cross so much!
anyway, RURUing last step is the best, and u can only do it thru EO
think about it!

Me too. 3 years since I've started and I'm only 15-16 seconds. I'm currently doing something about this though - See signature.

Hum... You should learn to orientate edges. Without this step Petrus is just the poor man's Fridrich.

Doing first 2 layers without a cross (while saving the time and the moves for the cross, too) sounds like a winning strategy (but as far as I know noone yet mastered this)

The look-ahead isn't very good in the block-building strategy. Cross (or XCross) is nicer.
The only advantages of the Petrus method are : few cube rotations, and 2-gen. Then you have to orientate edges.

Doing xcross is making a 2x2x2 block + 2 edges, add a corner and you have the same amount of pieces you need to inspect to build a 2x2x3.
while making a pair is certainly easier than building a block (at least for most, and usually because of lack of practice), making an xcross is, if i may put it this way, as easy as building a 2x2x3.

I also think extending a 2x2x2 to xCross is much simpler than 3x2x2 extension (one piece less and edges are on independet faces, too)

But planning full Xcross during inspection is still to difficult for me.
even just placing the final two edges may still need alot of moves. (So in the end Xcross, for me just means reducing the possibility for a bad/"difficult to see" next slot)

So Xcross don't feel rewarding for me, while doing Heise like F2L is a really nice option (if you get an CE pair for free)

I was wondering. Is doing a 2x2 then adding on cross pieces an X cross to you? It seems like the majority of Fridrich users make an X cross doing something more akin to having an edge in place, and solving a pair with a D move to make a pair while making an offset cross. Is either one more efficient than the other? I would assume this isn't an issue for most that a 2x2 is more natural for them to make then a cross >_<

i´m so funny at trying to do fridrich, haha, usually i can go cross pair pair pair, blah, but sometimes, i just can´t and end up doing Petrich, 2x2x2, edge, edge, som wierd insertions resembling 4a/4b, 2Look OLL/COLL and PLL. sometimes I even do cross pair pair (EO!) pair pair, haha

3x3x3 petrus pb: 16.98 ; COLL (28/40) :)

Most of the time the block first approach is very close to optimal.

New webpage project!

Well, i´ve been working on a really basic webpage for all the newbies of the group that are kind of surprised that i dont fridrich my cube and want to see what´s petrus about.
even though i´m not the fastest of the group (there´s a couple of sub-20 fridrichers) i´m quite fast for most of them, so i thought i could do something for them, sort of a tutorial, but in spanish (since i´m in Argentina!)
the counterpart? i´m doing it in google sites, since its free and i can do it from my job.
good part? mmm
good part is that i´m doing a Petrus tutorial =P

so, i´m wondering, what d you suggest could be more didactic:

example-guided solves for each step?
embedded youtube video for each step?
both combined?
i cannot embed java animated cubes...but i can embedd pictures. do u think is there any picture worth including, blockbuilding-wise??

any ideas are welcome

thanks in advance!

by the way, if any of you want to see what it looks like by now, here´s the link:
