[Help Thread] Petrus Discussion and Help thread

Alright. So it's been a couple months now, and I think I'm proud enough of my times to announce that I've switched to Fridrich as my main method. I just got my first sub 16 average of 12 with Fridrich a few minutes ago and I'm pretty pumped. I'm still using 2 Look OLL and I X cross ridiculous amounts. I'm still better at making a 2x2 than a cross without inspection and I X cross most of my big cube solves. If anyone wants to hear my thoughts on why I switched, and why I think Fridrich is a better method for speedsolving I'd be more than happy to share.

I figured this could go here instead of making an entire thread and then raging when no one cares.

What has always turned me off of Petrus is Step 3. I'm not a fan of half-solving and preparing pieces without doing a step along with it that usually takes up the same number of moves as the preparation. It's a waste of moves. I eventually tired of ZZ for this reason.

An example of piece preparation done well would be Roux Step 4. If it wasn't possible to combine 4a and 4b, the step wouldn't be as fast and appealing as it is.

Well put.

I sat down about an hour ago and I could tell I was really on my game. Starting with 4x4 I got a new PR single of 53 seconds, and I did some below average 5x5 times as well. I picked up my 3x3 expecting the same results, but all of the times were quite crappy. I tried doing some Petrus solves, and this was the result. That being said I think I've figured out a major flaw in my Petrus approach, and sub 14 is a somewhat realistic goal at this point. It was so nice how few moves all my solves were in relation to my CFOP solutions. I was about at the point again where I wasn't going to practice 3x3 anymore. That being said I'm still glad I practiced Fridrich because it gave me insight into other methods, as well as improved some of my finger tricks and overall burst speed, and I think if I didn't I wouldn't have ever realized the way I've been doing 2x2x3 is impractical.

Happy to have you back!!
i know i am not any reasonable point of comparison but, still, i can tell you i switched to many methods, and always got back to petrus, and each of those taught me something new =)
roux helped me a lot with my blockbuilding, fridrich helps a lot in adding some violence to the speedsolving, ZZ was kind of an EO practice, as well as 4a-b steps. and on all those using COLL to finish learning them =)
hope to hear/see more from you! u´re a great cuber, and this is definitely your area.

doubt. you said you could explain why you think fridrich is the best method. what would that be...?(in your opinion)

I'm not even sure anymore to be honest. Although I can say that it felt incredibly easy to get to get sub 20 with Fridrich, (in comparison to Petrus) that's not really comparable since I was already sub 20 with another method. Having actually gotten down to a sub 16 Fridrich average I definitely can say that it is much harder to be fast with Fridrich than I gave credit for. At equivalent times I think the Fridrich solutions are much simpler in general than Petrus, but again I definitely didn't give it enough credit for complexity. There's some pretty mind boggling cross/f2l tricks out there. The solutions people come up with are quite elegant. I'll see what I can do with Petrus for now but as far as potential goes I think I'm pretty confident to say that they are the same.

Feel the need to bump this.

On topic: I think I have gotten back into Petrus. Petrus was my first speedsolving method actually, but i quickly switched to fridrich. I now see the potential of petrus, and if you learn full zblll (only 160 algs, actually not that bad), you have a 1 look last layer. I average like low 18 with fridrich, and just got a 20.50 avg of 5 petrus, averaging like 24 though. Recognition of edge orientations and blockbuilding is what's killing me atm, but I think with practice petrus could be the best method out there. I'm learning coll atm.

finish learning oll first.

Hello, I'm joining the club!
I started Petrus two days ago and I'm averaging about 19 seconds with it now. I'm using it alongside waterman.

Any basic/advanced miscellaneous tips I should know about?

And is there a good way of doing EO? I either do y and then LRMU it, or just FBUS it. Where S' is done as FB'.
I'm sure there's a better way.

The other thing I have trouble with is keeping the RUing efficient. Any tips?

I always do LRMFU for EO, I've never thought of doing it any other way. FBURS doesn't seem too ergonomic, I doubt that the rotation makes much of a difference.

Practising and experimenting with RU efficiency is probably best. Try doing some Linear FMC solves, You'll eventually get to a point where you have most situations figured out, and it's just a matter of recognition. However, while a lower move count is good, don't focus too much on it. The RU stage doesn't have to be too efficient. It's probably better to turn fast and not stop than to get efficient solutions during this step, in my opinion.

Some RU examples:
Scramble: R' U2 R U R' U R' U2 R' U2 R U' R2 U2 R' U R' U R U2 R U2 R U R'
Solve: R2 U R' U2 R2 U' R' U2 R U R' U2 R

Scramble: R2 U R' U2 R' U2 R' U' R2 U R2 U2 R2 U R' U' R2 U' R2 U R U2 R U2 R'
Solve: R' U R' U R' U2 R U' R' U' R U' R' U R

Scramble: U2 R2 U R2 U' R U' R2 U' R U' R2 U R' U R2 U' R U' R' U R' U R U'
Solve: R' U' R U' R U R U R U R' U' R U R' U2 R

Scramble: U2 R2 U' R U2 R' U R2 U2 R U2 R' U R U2 R U R2 U R2 U' R' U2 R' U
Solve: U R2 U R' U R2 U2 R U R U2 R' U' R U R'

I'm not sure how efficient those solves are, but seeing alternative ways of solving can never hurt. I would have used EJF2L in several of those solves, though. I recommend learning EJF2L if you're serious about Petrus, and can be bothered. It can be quite useful during the RU stage.
