[Help Thread] Megaminx Discussion

Sorry Shadowslice. I don't think that I got your points clearly. Could you please elaborate?
What he's saying is that some people do use full PLL on megaminx. However because of the extra edge and corner there are many more cases possible. There are about 160 151 cases for megaminx PLL so it requires a lot of commitment to learn.

You can adapt some 3x3 PLL algorithms to work on the megaminx, but the extra edge and corner mean that they won't always solve the case you expect. Even with that, the majority of megaminx cases can't be solved with 3x3 PLLs.

Full Megaminx PLL is 151 algs, there for most do it in 2 steps. (OLL = 259 cases.)

So 2-step LL in 410 algorithms... or you can use the megaminx-tripod method and solve the last 'layer' in 2 steps with 51 algorithms and a few setup moves...

I've been looking for a list of tripod algs but couldn't find anything decent. Most of the links are old/broken, or link to finishes assuming you solve the last F2L slot first then L5P rather than solve the tripod as a whole.
The normal Tripod algs work fine.
I'm not sure that's true.
For megaminx, you'd surely want algs in <R, F, U> and any of the few tripod alg sets I've seen weren't.
(Although if there was a half-decent set anywhere that'd be a start.)

with the new cubes which came out, I got a lot more motivated again. So I took my splits of 12 solves (I know it's not a lot and not very accurate, I'll extend that out soon), but here they are:

F2L: 18.3
S2L: 27.3
LL: 10.9

Where can I improve now and how? I think my S2L is not the best, and I already do a lot of untimed solves to get a better effciency instead of spamming TPS. But that doesn't help too much, it just won't get better. Any tips?
(And for LL; I am learning a few easy PLL's now)

Does anyone have splits for sub 2 with Balint
Star and f2l: 39.97
S2lblocks: 36.37
S2l: 12.36
Ll: 19.77
Total: 1:48.x
If you're going to use balint I recommend you don't do it the normal way of blocks then s2l. Do two blocks and then the s2l pair in between to minimize the amount of places pieces can be in.

i think the "optimal" splits for megaminx is: F2L 2/6 S2L 3/6 LL 1/6 so for sub 2 that's F2L 40 S2L 60 and LL 20

Is being "order neutral" common? That is where after F2L, you have an undetermined order in which you solve the faces, (including LL) before starting the solve. My LL colour is not set and it changes. I've never come across this idea in any discussion I've had about megaminx so I thought it might be interesting to ask.

Guys, I wanna know that I'm travelling in the correct path. Please clarify me.
I started to work on last layer of megaminx.
First I started to learn 2 Look LL.
For OLL, I have memorised the algs from the site "http://www.kungfoomanchu.com/guides/andy-klise-megaminx.pdf".
Edge Orientation - 3 algs and Corner Orientation - 16 algs.
Totally 16 algs for OLL.
Now I started to analyse the PLL.
I'm referring the site "http://hem.bredband.net/_zlv_/rubiks/megaminx-new/".
From the home page, If I memorised all the Horseface(60 algs) and Mushroom cases(60 algs), am I able to do the 1 Look PLL?
One Look PLL means the combination of Mushroom and Horseface cases?
When comes to Two Look PLL, Sunny(16 algs)+Bunny(16 algs) will do the Two Look Corner Permutation? For edge permutation 16 algs. So Totally 16+16+16 = 48 algs for Two Look PLL.
One Look PLL - 120 algs?
Two Look PLL - 48 algs?
Comments on my OLL algs also.
Is there any site for one look OLL?

2look LL for megaminx is ridicolius, if you're trying to become sub 1 some PLLs may be useful but 1LL OLL is worthless since CO is completely 2gen which is very fast.

The same team that hosts the site you referred to also has OLL algs. Here's an alternative home page for their Mega LL project:
https://sites.google.com/site/permuteramera/home

OLL Direct:
https://sites.google.com/site/permuteramera/oll

I should note, however, that many of their algs do not appear to be speed optimized. And they don't often have alternative algs to choose from. Even their Pure CO algs are pretty bad compared to other Mega resources like Andy Klise, Otter, and SirWaffle. So... consume at your own risk.

There isn't any pure CO algs on the site (or any other).
And if you want to find your own algs LarsV's (Vandenbergh) solver is easy to work with, but when you add sides than 3 it gets really slow (especially for PLL), I had the solver run for 12+ hours on some cases without finding anything usefull, and you can solve all PLLs with <RU> if you like that, don't you wish 3x3 worked the same :)

And remember when we put together the page, no one did PLL on Mega, Balint & Simon were the first ones to start with it. So there wasn't really a way to optimize the algs back then, and first priority was to get "decent" algs for every case.

My next plan was/it to find good 2-alg solutions for cases, but haven't had any time.

Whoops! I misused the term "pure CO". I should have just said "OCLL".

I totally get it. I hope you didn't think that I was bashing you guys... this site has been my bible for the past few months while I've been getting into Megaminx... so... thank you for everything! And I see it's been a few years since there's been updates, so that gave others a lot of time to find alternative algs.

I'm curious... what do you mean by 2-alg solutions?
