cubingapp suggestion thread

Hi! could you add a license to cubingapp, without one it is not open-source!
I recommend AGPL for online services, but it's up to you. Thanks
I can't believe I forgot that 😆 I added an MIT license now

Also it seems a lot of people want the name ranks, so I will go ahead and build that! I've started digging into names, and I realized some interesting stuff

293 people only have 1 name
97,005 people have 3 names
32,206 have 4 names
3,830 have 5 names
1,001 people have 6 names names
162 people have 7 names
69 people have 8 names
7 people have 9 names
2 people have 10 names

Also some people have an anglicized name followed by their native name in parentheses, such as Hamidreza Morovaty Sharif Abadi (حمیدرضا مروتی شریف آبادی).

A couple followup questions:
  • Would you want to match just the first name, or all name parts?
  • Do you want partial names? For example if you put in Alex, should it also return Alexender or not?

Your counts don't match the statistics page

oof idk why it doesn't match. I was just doing quick research of names to understand how much variety there is

Small suggestion. I dunno if this was for April Fools yesterday but for Kinch Score and Sum of Ranks can we please have NxN back.
this was not part of the joke, it was an actual mistake. it's fixed now!

@CubeLite ngl at first I was hesitant about the name ranks idea, but it is by far the most popular page on cubingapp.com now. it's about half of the traffic, so thank you for that idea!
You're welcome, I also like it how it came out, I didn't know before that I was 2nd for skewb average so that is cool to know

I just realized that out of 325 people named “Brandon” who have an official 3x3 single, I’m 2nd!!!

Small problem I noticed, if you put in a name that commonly appears in longer names the ranks are messed up a little:

What appears when you enter "Alik", almost everyone here is not named Alik, adding a space at the end helps a little but there's still many problems (& "Malik's)
thanks for the feedback! I have added a few new options so you can have more control over how matching works
  • First name exact: Match if the first name is exactly the same. For example, "jon" matches "Jon Doe" but not "Jonathan Doe".
  • Last name exact: Match if the last name is exactly the same. For example, "smith" matches "Alice Smith" but not "Alice Smithson".
  • Any name part: Match if any part of the name is the same. For example, "son" matches "Jackson Brown".

Could there be an option to ignore special characters for name ranks? I can't compare myself to Tymon Kolasińki because his last name has the accent, while mine (Lasinski) doesn't have the accent, because my Canadian passport doesn't use the accent - it just confuses things.

TLDR: My WCA profile doesn't have the acute accent on the n, so I can't compare myself to Tymon 🤣

this one is difficult! but I just added an 'advanced mode' option where you can use your own sqlite pattern

to compare Lasinski to Kolasiński, the pattern would be %lasi_ski. the percent wildcard matches a string of any length, and the underscore wildcard matches a single character
