I'm just curious, who here is color neutral? I'm totally color neutral for speedsolving, except for K4 and K5,(but I'm not very good at either of those methods anyway.) I think that has a lot to do with how I first learned to solve the cube. I learned a beginner's method from a book from the 80's. The book didn't suggest to start with any particular color and I'm glad it didn't, because if it had I probably wouldn't be color neutral today. I don't have any trouble with recognizing any cases with different colors. I can recognize any PLL case by looking at just two faces, no matter where I start my cross. I think the obvious benefit from starting with any color is an easy cross, which flows into fast F2L and a fast solve. What other benefit do you see doing it this way?And for those of you who start with a certain color every time, what is your argument on why this is better?
As for blindsolving, I am not color neutral in that form of cubing. Is anyone here? I can not think of much of a benefit, however, because if a piece is permuted, than it doesn't mater what color the faces are, it's still permuted. The only benefit I see is easier orientation.

Well, there are some benefits to color neutrality, but solving for a predetermined color each time also has it's own advantages. You will already know what you want to solve. The pieces will be distinct to you and so you won't be wasting time looking around for the best cross*(dependent on method). You can spend inspection time looking ahead more. So really, it helps you have a more focused observance, so there's better and quicker recognition.

Opposite color solving is enough for me. I always use the same general color scheme, recognition is still fne, but I have almost twice the chance at a good cross.

(Mostly, however, I solve yellow if white doesn't seem to have a strikingly good cross but yellow's is fine...)

I wonder how many threads there are on this topic....

I wish I could start with any color and have no problems doing F2L. When I first started I was told that it is better to try to find a finished or more finished cross during inspection and starting from there. Well, didn't work out well for me. I'm just used to doing yellow. I used to do white, I have no idea why I switch to yellow, but now when I do white, doesn't feel as comfortable.

i usually start with either green or white, i dont know why but i guess i can look at the colors easier, like on the U face and top layer. with yellow (if i start with it) i cant tell what i am doing... weird

i am color neutral mainly to find easier crosses and X-Crosses. it is easier to see how many more pairs can be preserved when you can switch your starting color.

White - one of my friends did that, so then I lost my color neutrality virginity, and started using only white. I can manage okay with yellow, but then I have to think about what color I am using. I get confused easily with the other 4.

i am about +2 seconds on yellow and +3~8 on any other color

but i also find color neutrality more risky to mess up in comp so i doubt i ever would unless i saw like a 3 move double x cross XP

I'm completely colour neutral, although I think I might try using a colour for a period of time, to improve my cross, as it currently sucks. Hmmm, I'll pick blue, everyone seems to use white/yellow/green, I want to be different :p .

Then you'll be slower on non-blue crosses. :p

I tried picking one for a while, and generally speaking my white and yellow crosses are a bit faster than other colors now (or those other colors are a bit slower than white or yellow). The difference is small, though, only 1-2 seconds.

I have always been color neutral except for 4x4 centers where I prefer to start with white and yellow; I will use others though if they are really easy. I can't even imagine not being color neutral on 3x3.

Yowch, that did not go well. An average of 28 seconds  . Although, I have been doing some heavy work today, and my muscles may have stiffened up quite a lot from it, slowing me down.... (I'm really just making excuses :p )

EDIT: Ok I've given up on this idea already, who needs to be good at cross when there's almost always a good one there anyway?

I have always been color neutral, although I've noticed recently that I'm starting to develop a preference for colors that tend to stand out. For example, on one of my cubes I have a hot pink opposite black color scheme, and I tend to solve that hot pink side first.

I just use opposite color when white doesn't look good...I can do similar times on yellow, and really good ones with easy crosses (just like white)

but if I try the other, I'll get confused at F2L :D LL is easy, but...

I'm kinda 5 seconds slower with other colors...

I usually solve white, but if theres a nasty white cross, I'll go yellow.

When I race my friends, the slower ones especially, I like to scramble their cube and solve cross and an F2L pair on like, green or something. Then I see if they take the "bait". Good times.
