[Help Thread] Colour Neutral Discussion and Help

Although I was already yellow/white color neutral with petrus, I forced myself to fully color neutral when I decided to switch to CFOP. at first my off color times were more than double my on color times but after a few months there was just a slight difference. now my times for all colors are exactly the same. I'm really glad I made the effort.

Still working on that, but I'll get there soon. Do you still solve just the white and yellow side or do you look for the best side to work on first?

Becoming colour neutral was very easy for me, I actually thought it was normal and most speedcubers were colour neutral, guess I was wrong. It took 2 weeks to completely master it, and I'm now much faster than I was before! All I did was practice the cube colour neutrally, so no starting on white if there was a better case on another colour!

Wow. Never realized how easy it was to become neutral. I was w/y in two Days, a week later blue as well (a lot harder)...Now i just realised I got green, orange and red for free. I know them perfectly without even practicing. The brain is Amazing!

two days ago i started trying to be colour neutral with roux. i went from high 40s to high 20s since then. i think colour neutrality can really benefit block building methods. the hardest part is deciding which colours to use for first block and planing it out.

just did a CN Ao100: 28.909 (σ = 6.74)

I am starting today. Since I am new to cubing. I want to learn to breed out bad habits before they happen.

Going to solve like this

Day 1-6: Blue only, Orange only, Yellow only, Green only, Red only, White only.
Repeat for days 7-12
Then start looking for best cross.

I am only doing one colour for a day(hopefully an hour a day) to understand F2L placement for that cross colour.

Will update before New Year.
Right now I solve between 40 - 1 min. See if it makes a big difference

EDIT: Day 1(Blue Cross): Best time: 37.65 New PB [avg5: 1:21.23 (σ = 19.77) avg12: 1:14.29 (σ = 12.05) avg50: 1:15.37 (σ = 18.75)] Was all over the place lmao. Worse Average yet new PB...hmm

EDIT: Due to laziness I didn't update on my path. But pretty much on day 2 did Orange only then day 3 I did red only. Day 4 just decided to look at all colours. Solved over the rest of my two week holiday CN. Now I am full CN after 2 weeks. Coming up on two months of cubing and I am fully CN and know 21/21 PLL. I am pretty much a sub 40 solver(except when I mess up new OLL's I am trying to learn. Still never go over 50 sec and I am starting to get sub 30 a lot the last two days.)
I don't know about sub 20 solver but for newer solvers I highly recommend training CN.

I started solving color neutral about 1.5 months ago. I was around 14 seconds before i started.

In the first two weeks i had times like 17-20 but after that i slowly got back to 14 seconds.

I solved like this:

First 3 days random picked color and after that i did averages of 100 or 150 on the same color. After 1 month i looked for the best cross. Sometimes I looked around 1 minute at the cube to find the best cross. Now I`m back down to the 15 second.

I think most important is that you don't give up even thug i get slower first.

A while ago I tried to become CN by just brute forcing the matter. It didn't work, and even W/Y CN just kinda failed. However, I got distracted by some other things for a little while, ands I recently began cubing again. I decided to try a few CN solves just for fun, and I realised that they were almost as easy as white crosses. Granted, my times are so horrible that it would be hard for the solves to be much worse, but I think the fact that I wasn't forcing myself to do anything is what made it easier for me. I think part of the reason I took a break for a little while was that I was trying to force myself to learn more and more algs for CFOP, and about halfway through PLL, I just got discouraged. Now I am trying to learn roux, practicing CN, and slowly returning to my PLLs. I think that working more casually on it is what has got me back into it.

On another note, I have always been CN for 2x2x2, I think because it is so much easier to plan the first layer before I get impatient and start turning things. My biggest problem right now with CN on 3x3x3 is that I don't spend enough inspection time on my cross and end up arbitrarily picking some color.

Do you think if I am averaging 16 that color neutrality would help? I am Y/W neutral now.

I think if you are at that speed it is very very hard to get equally fast CN without huge amounts of training. But, at that speed it will be also very nice to focus on advanced solving like X-crosses. Being CN will help you a ton. If I was at 16s secs average I probably would stick with what I was doing.

I have just started cubing (just over a week ago), but never fixed to any colour. If a colour requires fewer time to do the cross, I would do that. Over the 2000 solves I did in the past ten days, I actually did the white cross the FEWEST and did orange and yellow the most. I don't really understand what CF feels like...

So I solve blue and green but I practice with white when I am bored. As a result I am terrible with orange and red but can get decent solves with white and yellow.
And so maybe just picking up 2 new colors could be more beneficial for the work put in than trying for full color neutrality. Whenever I have a bad cross for green and blue there is usually a white or yellow cross that is decent. So I don't think I will go full CN but learning a new pair of opposite colors could be a decent alternative. Also you get more practice with that new set and will likely catch up to your original cross color faster than if you were full CN.

Color neutrality

Does anyone have tips on becoming color neutral on 3x3? (I am opposite neutral now)

Literally all I did to become CN was to solve for a few days on each of my non-'comfortable' colors...I was good with White/Yellow, so I spent 2 days only solving green, 2 only solving blue, 2 red and 2 orange. After that, I would practice solving whatever side had an easier cross and in no time I was color neutral.

I find that I'm color neutral on the 2x2, but I have to consciously recognize on my last layer, what color I'm solving my OLL for. So maybe if you (like ChickenWrap said) just practice some times really thinking about the pieces you are looking for, you might just get used to any color.

For instance, when you are finishing up your F2L, just keep thinking "Ok, orange is on top this time. Solve the OLL for orange. Orange."

OR

When you are doing your actual F2L, just literally think out "OK, green in on the bottom. Look for peices with green, I need the red/yellow slot filled. Look for Green/Red/Yellow. Green/Red/Yellow. Green goes on the bottom". Maybe slow solve for the first 10-15 as well, and then try and go for speed? Just throwing out tips here.

I've been working off and on to become color neutral for a couple years now, and today I finally set a new PB average of 5 of 13.15!

I don't practice as much as I used to, but it feels good to be improving again! :D
