[Help Thread] ZZ and ZB Discussion

Yeah, i learned them and i would also reccomend learining them, just for the heck of it. you can use them in so many ways, it would be a shame to exclude them.

I do not use them for speedsolving anymore though. what i do is:

1. get a sune case
2. look on the U Face.
3. 3 possible location for adjacently coloured sticker pairs
4. decide whether to do niklas or sune
5. ???
6. This gives me a 1/3 chance of EPLL, and doesnt need full COLL recognition.

I've got the basics of EO+Line and ZZF2L, so I may make a start on COLL. So, where's the best place for COLL algs? A recognition guide would also be nice. Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking of learning the Pi cases first.
Learn Pi and Double-Sune (H) together, because two of the four H cases are inverses of Pi cases, and the other two are double-sune and F+3xSexy+F' (which you probably already know). Also, their recognition goes hand-in-hand.

yeah Pi and H first
H because there's really only 4 cases, and Pi because they're easy
the rest aren't too bad, just don't be like me and be stubborn and try to come up with a different recognition for Sune and A-Sune, because mine sucks and is a bit harder to check the stickers i need to quickly so i have to change it lol

I thought I'd do a ZZ example solve:

D' B' F R L' U2 D' B R' L' D2 L U' D' F D2 R' F R' B' F' U2 B2 F' U'

x2 // Inspection
U' F B' L B D R' D' // EO+Line
U R' U R U' R' L2' U2 R U R // R 1x2x2
U R U' L' R' U2 L U L // L 1x2x2
U' R U2 R' L U2 L' U2 L U' L' // L 1x1x2
U' R U R' U2 R U' R' // R 1x1x2
y' R U R' U R U2 R' // OCLL
M2' U' M2' U' M' U2' M2' U2' M' U2' // PLL

The LL was really COLL/EPLL, but I didn't know that was the COLL case, so I counted it as OCLL/PLL. So, what can I do to improve my EO+Line/F2L? Also, should I learn the rest of PLL, incase I get an OCLL skip? And just out of curiosity, are the adjacent and opposite PLL swaps COLL cases?

Let me know if you have any questions about the stuff I did.

After your EO line:

D' B' F R L' U2 D' B R' L' D2 L U' D' F D2 R' F R' B' F' U2 B2 F' U'

x2 // Inspection
U' F B' L B D R' D' // EO Line
R2 U2 L' U2 L' U' L' // B1
U2 L U L' // P1
R U' R' U R U' R2 // B2
U2 R U R' U2 R U' R' // P2

^ could have cancelled into the antisune but I wouldn't see that in a speedsolve.

Long story short, there was a blue/orange block already formed after your EO Line. Most of the time I would take advantage of those kinds of blocks.

Also, your red cross piece was trapped on the left side (it normally belongs on the right). Personally, I would work on the left block first and hope that it frees up my red cross piece. Spending extra moves to transport the red cross piece to the other side takes too many moves.

It also looks like you have a very strong preference for "pairs". I highly suggest looking at blocks. This is the "other half" of what you should be doing for the f2l. ZZ is awfully inefficient (in terms of move count) if you only do pairs.

Continuation from your EO Line and first block:

D' B' F R L' U2 D' B R' L' D2 L U' D' F D2 R' F R' B' F' U2 B2 F' U'

x2 // Inspection
U' F B' L B D R' D' // EO Line
U R' U R U' R' L2' U2 R U R // B1
U2 R L2 U L2 // B2 (three move insertion already set up)
R' U2 L' U' L // P1
U R U' R' U R U' R' // P2

My EO line:

D' B' F R L' U2 D' B R' L' D2 L U' D' F D2 R' F R' B' F' U2 B2 F' U'

x2 // Inspection
L' U B U2 F' D2 // EO Line
U R' U' L' U2 L U L' U' L' U L' U' L // Left block
U R U' R' U R U R' U R' U2 R // Right block

A more straightforward EO Line:

D' B' F R L' U2 D' B R' L' D2 L U' D' F D2 R' F R' B' F' U2 B2 F' U'

x2 // Inspection
F' U' D2 R F D' R' D' //EO Line
R U2 R U2 L // B1
U2 R' U' R U2 R U R2 // P1
U R' L U' L' U R U' R' U' R // Right Block

By the way, I made a 3 hour ZZ Tutorial.

An interesting continuation after your EOline:

D' B' F R L' U2 D' B R' L' D2 L U' D' F D2 R' F R' B' F' U2 B2 F' U'

x2 // Inspection
U' F B' L B D R' D' // EOLine
R2 U L U L' U2 L2 // 7 move left block
R U' R' U R U' R' U' R2 //2x2x1 block + set up insertion
U' R' U R //insert last pair
or
U' R' U' R U R' U' R U R' U R // F2LL (not a very good case)

or a more straightforward right block:
R' U' R U' R' U2 R' // 2x2x1 block
U R' U R U' R' U' R // last pair

I don't use that technique of solving the entire 3x2x1 block at once in speedsolves very often, but it comes up occasionally.

or

x2 (inspection)
B2 L' B2 U B' U2 F' D2 L' (xxeoline 9)
U2 R U2 R' U R2 U R U' R' (right 10)
finish

Let me know if you have any questions about the stuff I did.

After your EO line:

D' B' F R L' U2 D' B R' L' D2 L U' D' F D2 R' F R' B' F' U2 B2 F' U'

x2 // Inspection
U' F B' L B D R' D' // EO Line
R2 U2 L' U2 L' U' L' // B1
U2 L U L' // P1
R U' R' U R U' R2 // B2
U2 R U R' U2 R U' R' // P2
I'm surprised you missed this shorter solution:
x2
U' F B' L B D R' D'
R2 U2 L' U2 L' U'
R U' L' // Left block
U' R U2 R2 U' R2 U R' U2 R // Right block

Another solution (39 HTM) :
x2
F R2 U L B U' L U' F2 // EOL
L U' L' U // 6 pairs !!!
L U R' U L' U L U L2 R U2 L2 // Left block
R U R U' R' L // Right block
y U' R' U L U' R U L' // 3 corner cycle. Solved.

Thanks for your replies! asmallkitten - The reason I didn't use the blue-orange block was because I first saw the green-red first. So, I made the pair, and then paired it up with the edge. I will look into blocks soon on Cride5's tutorial. And I may also have a look at your ZZ tutorial (the F2L bit, not all 3 hours :p)

I never really officially said that I was switching to ZZ, but I have, so I thought I should post something about it.
I've set new PB's in the week that I've used it, and I am learning COLL. You can really help me get better if you reconstruct one of my solves and/or critique it.
Thanks!

awesomesauce!

In the words of asmallkitten when I announced my switch, cool guy. I knew you were switching/thinking of it. Welcome aboard :)
