WRC Statement on Frame-by-Frame Analysis

A member of the board has responded publicly to criticism of the board:

It’s had mixed reception to say the least…
Summary of that post:
We decided that LITERALLY BREAKING THE RULES won't get Yiheng punished because there was a similar precedent where the guy wasn't punished, and it would be unfair if Yiheng was punished, but from now on people will be punished if something similar happens, cause THAT's fair.

Leaked Email from the board:

This email is sent on behalf of myself (Kerrie Jarman apparently), Blake Thompson, Ethan Pride, and Nick Silvestri.

Each of us Board members are here because we looked around the community and saw there was nobody else willing to step up into the Director role. Each of us loves this organization enough to dedicate countless hours of our personal time to keep it running. We have a legal responsibility of running the organization under California Nonprofit Law. a position none of us takes lightly, and we do it for no compensation.

However, if the WCA members have lost confidence in our ability to lead this organization, we are willing and ready to resign.

One of the hardest aspects of this week has been the speed this has all developed, it has spiraled out of control faster than we could possibly respond. We have no PR team or assistants to help us work through the issues and draft communications. We have had no chance to discuss the community response internally. We are in 4 different time zones in 3 continents making it difficult to get together.

We need to make it abundantly clear that removing us as Directors will be monumentally disruptive and fractious for the WCA and will likely do long-term damage. Here is a glimpse of the immediate consequences we foresee if we resign as Directors:

There is significant confusion on what aspects of the WCA operations can legally continue without a Board of Directors.

Progress is halted (or at the very least significantly disrupted) on all projects and tasks that the Board is involved in:

The Worlds 2025 contract is not signed

Planned opening of bids for 2026 continental championships will not happen

The website redesign, currently in full swing, will hit significant roadblocks

Imminent contract renewals for our paid software contractors will not be completed

Planned Bylaws changes will not commence

The project to bring on a full-time Executive Director will end

We do not have a Data Privacy Officer and we are in negotiations with the WRT on how to resolve this

Our ongoing sponsorship campaign to involve a wider number of supporting companies into cubing will stop

Progress on the three ongoing legal cases involving the WCA will be hindered

Relationship with our major sponsor, Rubik’s deteriorates immediately

Contract negotiations with Rubik’s for sponsorship past 2025 stop

Trademark registrations in multiple countries will be disrupted

WQAC project to improve Delegate training and quality will be delayed

New Delegates cannot be appointed

Staff cannot be promoted

New ROs cannot be recognized, of which there are two in the queue

Our tax return will not be filed, making the WCA liable for fines

Most importantly, all institutional knowledge of these Board members is lost and there is no appetite to transfer that significant amount of knowledge to future Board members.

We are volunteers and we are doing our very best to lead this organization.

Signed,

Blake Thompson, Ethan Pride, Kerrie Jarman, and Nick Silvestri

Carter Kucala message in 2x2 solvers:

Hi,

For those who may be unaware, I am Carter Kucala, Leader of the WCA Regulations Committee. I am not talking on behalf of WRC (remember too that this is an unofficial forum), but instead wanted to share my personal perspective with the community.

As has now been made public, the Board’s handling of the 0.78 situation has caused a large amount of frustration for WRC, enough so that we it was necessary to send an email to all staff detailing some of these frustrations. The goal of this email in my eyes was to share WRC’s perspective with WCA Staff, hold the Board accountable, and promote change within the organization so that this situation does not happen again.

After this email was sent (and subsequently leaked to the public), I received countless personal messages of support, saying it isn’t my or WRC’s fault, etc. I am incredibly appreciative of these comments and I thank everyone who has done so. Despite this, this past week has been incredibly difficult for me, and I do feel somewhat responsible for the events that transpired after.

What happened after I sent that email was disastrous. In almost every corner of the community, there has been so much hate directed towards the Board, and even towards individual members, claiming they are not fit for their role and calling for their removal. This is not appropriate and will only cause more harm to the WCA.

Quite interesting that, while it's understandable that they would list out all the way a complete ousting of the board could severely disrupt the inner workings of the organization, there is not even a single mention of a much less destructive solution: acknowledging that the Board's decision is not what the community wants (which is near unanimous as this point) and to adopt WRC's ruling on this matter.

Also interesting that this much less radical solution has been echoed by all corners of the community, and calls for the ousting of the board mostly came after the response we got "justifying" the board's overruling of the WRC's stance. If the board hears us, like they said, surely they would've heard about this solution?

Most interesting that they have publicly indicated a willingness to resign before even acknowledging the existence of this groundbreaking solution. Seems like they're going to stick by that hill.

Very interesting indeed.

Please post more than a link because WCA forums require an account to view

Magna Carta just dropped
they really called it the Magna Carta before? that's funny but just makes it harder to take seriously. at least they renamed it

tdlr the decision is going back to the WRC, and previously they have unanimously voted to DNF the 0.78, but the board ofc overruled it, so this time they will also most likely come to the same result

There is a key difference this time; the WRC will be using frame counting to determine whether the average should be penalized. The post linked said "In addition, we have authorized and encouraged the WRC to perform frame-by-frame analysis of past attempts, including cases that have already been closed."

Well then that almost certainly will only strengthen their decision as people have already used frame-by-frame anaylsis and the sliding is even more clearer.
