[Help Thread] Megaminx Discussion

What you could do is star - f2l then make like a pseudo cross so 2 edges on one of your f2l colours. For example you could do white f2l than put the insert the purple/light blue edge as it is a cross piece and do the same with purple/orange. Then you do the insert the 2 pairs so purple is done, then you move to yellow and insert the yellow/green piece as if it is a cross and so on.
Then when you're done the blue side, you make the "v" on the light yellow side and then insert the 2 f2l piece, then do last layer.

I do star-first f2l-"v" (2 edges and a corner)-second f2l. Basically the way described in lances tutorial. I am looking to get faster because that takes me about 5 minutes.
You're probably not doing anything wrong - just needing more practice/speed. Lookahead, move efficiency, and physical turning speed are huge factors and can easily mean the difference between 1:00 and 5:00 with the same method.

New here so forgive me if I'm in the wrong place for this, but I really want a megaminx and I'm unsure as to which one I should get. Any recommendations?

I've kinda narrowed it down to Dayan stickerless or MF8 white with tiles, but if there are any other really good ones could anyone let me know what and where I can get them? Or just weigh in on which of those to get? I'm leaning towards MF8 because of the price but Dayan hasn't failed me with a cube yet. Thanks in advance! :)

edit: oh yeah, the Shengshou is also a consideration.

Dayan stickerless is not competition legal, so you might want to reconsider that. Shengshou has been said to be quite good, better modded, and the price is quite low too. I personally use an MF8 with different springs and the only complaint it has received so far is that it's too smooth lol. So yeah, if you have the money go for the Dayan, I heard it can be very good with breaking in, but I personally don't quite like the feel of it. You should also go for comps and try out the different minxes, and decide which one you like the best for yourself.

There are no competitions anywhere near where I am so it'll be difficult for me to try them, and I don't expect I'll be entering any in the near future, especially for megaminx, so competition legal isn't a huge problem for me. However I did look at the regular stickered Dayan and that seems to fit the bill too. I really like the idea of the ridges, so that might be my final choice. Thanks for your advice! :)

Wut O_o
The fastest I've ever managed is 12:xy. How do you do the reduction part? I think my method is quite inefficient but I'm not sure
Same as my computer cube solves:
- solve first 6 centers
- pair up the 10 edges connecting them, using the freedom of the unsolved 6 centers, and solve megaminx F2L as you go
- solve last 6 centers
- pair up last 20 edges using an AvG/2-pair approach (solve two wings at once)
- megaminx S2L/LL

Just got my SS megaminx.
After tensioning it's supersmooth (I like this, dayan isn't smooth at all), fast and controlable in the same time. It's good, because if you want your dayan to be fast, you have to loosen it and if you do this every sides turn except that one you want to turn. This megaminx is really good but it locks because it doesn't cut reverse corners but I think it'll change after modding and it'll be better than dayan (not cornercutting, megaminx).

Thanks for that mini-review. By modding, what mod do you mean? I've been waiting to get a SS Mega, and so comparing +ve and -ve reviews, +ve seems to be more :)
