yeah, i was thinking that...

inspection - find cross, plus one or more pairs if possible, also look for possible (keyhole) x-cross (if using ADF).
cross execution - mindlessly perform moves for cross while looking for the best pair to start on
1st-3rd pair - look for next pair/decide on a good order/multislot
last pair - use either R'FRF'/inverse, RUR'/inverse, RU2'R'/inverse, to affect LL.
OLL - either one look, two look or compound. if i know more than one alg then decide on which to use.
PLL - recognise/execute. look ahead is difficult beforehand, just try to track blocks.
:)

lol, i saw that when i was reading about multislotting... it looks pretty cool, might put some effort into that once ive actually finished OLL.
are you a ROLLer, fanwuq?
EDIT
i could just not bother, and learn to use ZZ, COLL and EPLL, where lookahead to the PLL would probably be quite a bit easier :D

During inspection: ONLY cross (unless there's an easy X-cross or something)
During cross: Cross (I do cross on top most of the time for some reason)
During F2L: I try to keep track of the pieces the whole time. Find a piece, look for its pair.
Last Pair: Look at the edge orientation.
OLL: Look for the most obvious block.
PLL: Try not pressing reset when pressing the touchpads.

Well I do a different method than Fridrich. I am trying to finish making my 5-6look method (it's corners first).

During inspection I look for the fastest way to solve a layer minus one edge on either the white or yellow sides

After I solve a layer, I use CLL recognition and look ahead to do the corners.

While I solve the corners, I look at the edges that will go into the R-layer.

I solve 3 edges on the R layer, and the last edge on the L-layer in one look. At the same time, I recognize the algorithm needed to solve the last piece in the R-layer, and orient the Middle edges.

After and during orienting the middle edges, I look ahead to positioning them

Total number of looks is 5-6 if you master it (I currently use about 8 looks, and average 21 seconds).

inspection: find cross peices and think about the shortest way to place them
during cross: focus on building cross and if possible look for an f2l pair
1st F2L slot-3th F2L slot: look for next f2l pairs while pairing previous ones
4th F2L slot: finishing F2L and watching the yellow edges to get an idea of that the OLL maybe, and to get ready for the right AUF
OLL: just doing the OLL alg, looking for 2 simililar colours beside each other on the 3rd layer to prepare for the PLL AUF
PLL: just doing the PLL alg and getting ready to slam the cube down :D

inspection: figure out the more effective way to finish the cross, basically do the cross with finger tricks, see where the first pair will probably be.
during cross: build cross and keep track of where the pieces of the first f2l pair are
after cross: determine what to do with the f2l pieces
during f2l: finish the first pair with the tracked f2l pieces, look for the next f2l pair
during last pair of f2l: look at the edge orientation of LL and see what you can do to make into a cross (i dont know vhf2l yet)
during OLL: do it as fast as you can until the last 3 steps then look for bars for PLL
after OLL: line up the bars with the correct side and rotate cube if necessary
during PLL: try not to go too fast or else will cause me to twitch or do something stupid, look at the time and hope you can get sub 15
after PLL: stop timer and punch self in face cuz you did bad :D

like for example in OLL if you know that doing R U R' U R U2 R' on the cross would give you the fish then you would be looking for that and as soon as the cross is gone you know the fish is next

Cross-Look Ahead Questions

So, I am really, really trying to go sub 20 as fast as I can. After just 2.5 months I've gotten my first sub-30 solve. But, I think a few things are restricting me from reaching my goal.
1. My cube
2. Look ahead
3. Cross

2 and 3 are nearly one in the same. For example. Sometimes my last cross piece requires me to do a F move. This move however restricts my view of the cube thus limiting my look ahead. It usually takes me 1-3 seconds to find my first easy pair unless it's an easy pair up solve like an RUR' or something. I know I haven't mastered the cross yet, but I still remember when it took me 30 seconds to solve the cross.

So, the questions are.
1. Can you give me any tips for look ahead right after last cross piece?
2. Do you remember where you place your edges and corners while solving the cross?
3. Do you remember every move for cross during inspection? (I can remember up to 3 cross edges unless it's a really easy cross)

I'm the same way as you are.

Since we're about the same level (but it took me 9 more weeks to get close to the average I have now), I think I might be of some help...

When you're solving the last cross edge, but you realize (you have to see this beforehand) that you're going to HAVE to use F, instead use a d2 move (bottom two layers twice), then a B' to insert the edge. That way, while you're moving it back, you have a full view of your F2L before the cross is completed...

I also find that when you do that you might already have an edge pair set up, in which case build an x-cross and continue (moving that X-cross to the back, so you just need to find the ones that you can visually see)

As for WHERE i place my edges, you need some "relative" theory behind the cube.

If you know that red is your front face (yellow on top), then wherever you place your red/white edge, the green/white has to go on the right of that (relative to where it is, if you looked at it from the front), the blue/white edge has to go on the left, and the orange has to go on the opposite side...

Don't worry about your cross too much, though; although it still takes me ~8 seconds to finish the cross, I can do F2L in about 19 seconds now (23-27 seconds for full F2L), so my total solve time is ~35 - 40 (depending on the LL case).

Do the cross very slowly.

I hear that people can track the F2L pieces after the cross. Sadly I can't do this yet. I'm almost sub20 and can't wait to gain that ability :D

EDIT: Response to your 3rd question: You should be able to make the cross at once. You shouldn't be putting the pieces one by one if that's what you're doing. You might want to watch Badmephisto's tutorial on youtube as well.

practice doing ur cross blind, and do this until you can do the cross blind with only 15 sec inspection time. And when your finishing up ur cross you should be looking for ur first f2l pair rather that watching the cross.

My cross is around ~4 seconds, still trying the get it faster.

I already said I didn't master it; it was meant to imply that I'm pretty good at cross. That there suggest that I already don't do each piece one by one. Nice post Spyyder, I think I'll do just that.

Tracking part of your second step helps a lot. I drop about a second when I track OLL on the 2x2 using the Ortega Method. I suggest vaguely tracking a pair or what F2L pieces are in the slots or on the U-layer.

How to improve F2L look-ahead

For the last week, I haven't practiced the 3x3x3 at all. I focused on getting faster at 4x4x4, 5x5x5 but also Megaminx. I made about 40-50 megaminx solves a day, trying different approaches to solve it, but mainly the "group 3 pieces together, insert them to make f2l slots".

I picked up my 3x3x3 today to make some solves (I average around 35-40 seconds), and to my surprise I managed to get a sub-30 average of 25. I noticed that I dropped my F2L (including cross) from about 25 to 15-20 seconds! ( I do 2-look OLL and know about half of the PLLs, that explains the average only being sub-30 ;))

Now, I am not sure if this is common knowledge, but megaminxing did indeed improve my look-ahead. The edge-pairing on 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 also might have helped a bit, but I used to practice those a lot in the past but only recently got my megaminx and I didn't notice that much of a difference before.

So I guess all the "blame" goes to the megaminx :D!

Any comments?
