How do top speed cubers move their fingers so quickly?

I rarely ever time myself. Mostly because my times are pretty mediocre right now. On the bright side, I only have about 40 oll algorithms left to memorize and I will have learned full fridrich! They go by pretty quickly. I memorize about 2 a day.
 
The combination of practise and lookahead and quick recognition for fluent solves.
To do quicker finger tricks, just practise and practise.

I've seen some people flick the cube which is as it sounds flicking a layer across reducing your movement and what I call pulling the cube which isn't the real name, I just don't know what to call it, it's where you use your finger to pull a layer right down to your thumb or front edge of cube.

Maybe, these questions are hard because you have to estimate the speed 'talent' provides. That is how fast can anyone get before they're held back by their genes or neuroplasticity? I'd posit anyone can get sub-15, but I think sub-10 takes takes starting from an earlier age or finger physiology. Of course I'm eager to prove myself wrong in due time.

Thrawst, I feel like if you sat in front of a computer timing yourself 2 hours a day, changing things up a little (improving F2L cases, getting better OLL/PLL algs/learning random COLLs/OLLCPs, practising lookahead) you could get sub 10 too. I've thought I would've get sub "x" at many puzzles until I got them. You think sub 15 is possible because you're sub 15. I know of someone, who I won't name, who literally cubes all day. They've been cubing for half as long as me and are sub 10. I don't think it was natural talent, at the start when they were my speed, they turned just as fast as I did. But they continuously practised and improved whilst I seldom cubed, so they got faster.

I'll admit not everyone can break certain barriers. But I don't think sub 10 is an impossible barrier for most "youths".
 
I had this question after I watched the 7x7x7 final at worlds. Now that seems unnatural. I've tried my normal 3x3x3 fingertricks on one but evidently there is just no way that will work.

Name 1 person, just 1, that has a sub 10 official average who started cubing after they turned 20.

I'll save you some time, there isn't one.
If the stats are anything to go by you have to start young if you want to turn fast enough to sub 10 consistently.
 
I think that turning quickly isn't much about how fast you can move your fingers or how strong they are. It's about economy of movement, meaning using fingertricks that require not much hand movement and minimise pauses for resetting the fingers. Every movement of the hands does something. While one hand is adjusting it's grip, the other hand can be turning. The other thing is just building up enough confidence in your fingertricks that they will achieve the right moves when you do them faster than your brain can actually follow the individual turns.

*Young enough to have enough time to learn to turn fast. :) I'm no expert, but I guess that finger dexterity doesn't have much to do with it until you're significantly older than 20.
 
I'm pretty sure I can atain the tps of a sub 8 solve, I just can't do it in a solve. Fast fingers easy, looking ahead quickly hard.

Same. I've done a T perm at 10 TPS before, but I think I average about 3.5 in a solve. Not sure though, I've never had any of my solves reconstructed. My average movecount is probably 65ish (maybe more), and I average 18.5.
 
I watched a video of me getting a 30 second solve on a rubik's brand last year and I had terrible finger movement. I am much better now. Hopefully I will be able to look back at where I am now in a year and say "yeah, I kind of sucked back then"
 
Most of the reason why I am slow right now is just recognition. My look ahead is fine. I can always see the next pair in advance. It's just I don't usually know how to pair them up. If that makes any sense. Also, my oll and pll is pretty bad. So right now it is my brain holding me back lol.

but seriously though, i think it's a combination of practice and using cubes that allow you to turn that quickly. For algs, anyway. Lookahead and recognition is a huge part of it too

Not only does my username sound cool, it is also a joke. It means teaching people how to read and speak like black Americans.

There are what, 100 people with official sub 10 averages? There are how many competitors total? Now how many of those started after 20? It's a matter of numbers. Cubers that started after 20, practise two hours a day? I'd say this is a very, VERY small minority. Due to this, there may be none (do you have proof of that by the way? afaik WCA doesn't list age).

Your logic is the same as "the top 10 solvers are male, therefore men are faster than women".

Fast twitch fibre doesn't just disappear over age 20...

This is an excellent point. I am curious to know why the top speed cubers are teens. Is it just because teens have a lot of free time?
