Feeling slightly un-motivated.

So I've been cubing on and off for several years, I think I started in 3rd grade, and then got into it a little bit in 6th, but now I've been going for about 6 months, and have gotten pretty fast. I went from around 40s in September to around 18s now, but I'm having trouble improving recently, and it's making me a little bit frustrated. I have learned full OLL, PLL, and I have fairly efficient F2L according to discord, but I just feel like I want to get better, but don't know how, so I'm not very motivated. Blind solving has gotten me more into cubing again but then I can't get it out of my mind that I should get better at 3x3 before I start learning something new.

You can always try other methods like roux, ZZ or petrus, or something more obscure like SSC or Waterman. CFOP was really boring for me, and I find ZZ a whole lot funner.

40s to 18s in 6 months is pretty good improvement, took me around 9. Sometimes learning new things won’t help your times. Solid solving will do that. I did an ao100 in a few hours a few days back, just concentrating for that time, and it got my average down by a whole second, just through becoming more familiar with, say, blockbuilding cases, and COLL algs. PS don’t expect too much of yourself, you’re doing a great job, and most people will never pick up a cube in their life :)

Try learning Megaminx. X-Man Galaxy V2 is a great mega for like $20. It made my times drop about a second(sub 11s to sub 10s) from just practicing Mega for a couple weeks. You really need great lookahead to solve mega, and it translates over to 3x3.

How about taking a small break from 3x3? It might not be a bad idea to practice blind or other cubes for a week. Also you don't have to be good at 3x3 before you do blind, you can learn blind when you're a total beginner or when you're sub 10.;)

HOW TO BE MOTIVATED TUTORIAL

step 1:

define a goal... there are so many things you can do, just some examples:

- become sub15 on 3x3
- learn roux/zz and be decent with it
- become color neutral
- learn a new subset like zbll, ell, cll, ollcp or other
- subX with blind solving
- FMC
- learn to solve other puzzles and become decent with it

step 2:
create a quest thread where you document your progress and get feedback from fellow cubers

having a thread with people who are following your trajectory helps you to get motivated and be serious about your goals

I'd say that watching fast cubers youtube channels helps you get motivated too :D

good luck!

What you are facing is very common; in 3x3 you progress very fast until you hit around 17-18 seconds average. Then progress slows dramatically until you reach around 15 seconds average. At that point your progress pretty much stops, unless you start to take a more rigorous approach to cubing and start doing drills and really analyze your solves to see where you are losing time. Just daily fun random solves has a limit of how good you will get.
