Changes to the Weekly Competition website

I don't want to modify the format for 3BLD unless it is changed for the WCA. The current format is better practice for official competitions.

6x6x6 and 7x7x7 are different, for 2 reasons:
1. Doing an average of 5 doesn't really change the strategy for speedsolves like it does for blindsolves.
2. We had the average of 5 format for 6x6x6 and 7x7x7 before the WCA made the event official. I like preserving our original format, for historical reasons (and bragging rights :-) ).

If the WCA changes their official format for 3BLD (and there have been discussions about this), I will likely change ours to match. But until then, probably not.

What are your reasons for this opinion?

ao5 is a much more stable metric to judge skill level compared to a fast 3bld single.
While yes, ao5 could be more stable, one also has to take into account that 4/5 solves are still required. From a MBLD perspective, that's the same number of points (3) required for an average, but an ao5 requires a lot more endurance and 4 successes to get a successful result instead of just 3. I have a low success rate and with an mo3 format I can achieve a full mean kind of by chance, and with an ao5 format, not so much. While an ao5 would be more effective for people who are good at blind, this is not the majority of the blindsolving population.

getting a mean of 3 is hard enough

Why do 15 puzzle scrambles all start with D3 R U2 R D2 R U3 L3?
Scramble obfuscation, I'd guess. It makes an easy row+column less obvious just from looking at the scramble sequence. Same reason why FMC scrambles have the R' U' F padding.

Edit: Actually, a better example would probably be how 222/pyra/skewb scramble sequences are always forced to be the same length, no matter how easy or hard the scramble is.

My ego was curious how many top 100 Curvy Copter results I have, and I realized that currently when sorting by "100 results" it only includes the best single in each average (see here) instead of considering all singles. For example, my best time this week was a 1:22.89 which shows up at 37th, but I also had a 1:23.30 which is missing from the list. Just wanted to point this out as a potential future bug fix! :)

Thanks - I can see how I might have made that mistake. I hope someday to make that page actually fully functional (most of the options there don't fully work anyway), so I can try to clean it up next time I work on it, if I ever get to it. Thanks for pointing this out.

Is it possible to lower the volume of the inspection voice or to turn it off completely? I like to have some background noise playing from the browser but the inspection voice is unbearably loud...

Hi @Mike Hughey! The other day, I found an interesting bug after my kilominx landed on my keyboard, which ended up with a very high number. I kept it at that (I remembered the actual time lol) just to see what would happen. I ended up getting a 0.00 average, and when I checked the rankings, I had a DNS average putting me in 1st place. This was after doing the entire average (no DNFs/DNSs). Here is a picture of before I inputted the correct time:

Thanks!

I believe somewhere in the past 23 pages in this thread I have already mentioned that I would like to do this, but it would take some work and I haven't had time to do it yet. Someday I would like to add it to the overall rankings page, but I currently don't anticipate doing work like that anytime soon, sorry. Someday, hopefully!
Any updates on making the kinch rankings viewable? Just started competiting on speedsolving and it would be awesome to see how high on the rankings I am. I can only do so much by anticipating who the top solvers are, like i know luke garrett is insanely good at everything and i saw his kinch rank and was stunned to see a score of nearly 51. but it would be nice to see if theres anyone with a higher kinch score and a systemic way to view the rankings.

im sure theres a huge demand for this kinch rankings, because we all see this kinch score on our profiles, but theres no way to tell how good it is exactly.

Ao5 is a better indicator of ability, Mo3 is a compromise to allow in-person competitions to run more quickly.
While that may be the case, it is honestly a very jarring format for anyone who does big cubes competitively. we are all used to the mo3 format due to competiting for many many years, and we have even shaped our psyche for 6 and 7 around there being a mo3. An ao5 takes substantially longer, and for no benefit since getting used to an ao5 format is worse than getting used to a mo3 to prepare for competitions. Im okay with other events that are longer than 7x7 being an ao5 because they are unofficial events, so it literally doesnt matter. but i strongly think 6 and 7 should be mo3 because not only does every other weekly competition site do this as well, but it is more suited for people who actually go to competitions.

An extra 2 solves, or if you're really time-strapped and want to do 4 solves and DNS the 5th, doesn't take much longer. Especially if you're at a level where 3 solves instead of 5 messes up your mental game. Really, WCA should go to Ao5 for big cube finals and Ao12 for small puzzle finals.
