When I first joined this forum it was a place to look for help, support and advice from other people involved in both the speedsolving and advanced puzzle communities. "Algorithms, Can this be solved?, what did I do wrong?". Now, due to the "progression" threads that show up on the homepage as well as the number of petty arguments that are being allowed, this has become a chat room.

The "Upcoming Puzzles" thread is the only one that I look forward to clicking on when I visit this site. Bring back the "Single Answer Question.." threads and make "personal progress" a single thread. A place to post new pb's, things that you're excited about. Not everyone needs a progression thread that shows how excited you are to have learned that new * perm, and frankly, they're flooding the homepage (on mobile), with nothing but useless follow-ups about people I don't know. Prevent those progression threads from being on the homepage, the same way that off-topic threads are.

I say with the kindest of heart, either the mods for this forum have given up, or that this forum is now run by completely mindless "participation trophy" folks.

Maybe this forum can turn back into a forum dedicated to folks learning how to solve their next twisty puzzle, maybe not. Either way, the folks in charge need to stop letting the petty arguments flood useful threads and stop letting "JohnnyWhats'sHisname" share everything that might be an accomplishment to him show up on the homepage.

Kill the "progression" and mod's, start knocking down the petty disagreements.

I see nothing wrong with progression threads after I requested they be moved/contained in their own subforum. I hardly use the front page and check subforums I'm interested in. You can ask mods to hide that sub forum from the front page (or it might be doable in user settings) but there's no need to be so fatalistic. By the numbers the progression threads are generally popular across the site.

I agree on your point about off topic arguments. Recently the new mods have been tackling this better so I'd say give them a chance and use the report button.

So the progression threads are popular, let them be found by those who care! Personally, I don't, nor do those new to the site. I hate it when I open up the mobile homepage and half of the page is progression threads. How is that helpful to new members viewing the forum? It's not!

Keep the progression threads alive, my only point is that they not show up on the homepage. I don't care that someone got a new pb. If you do, great, go to that portion of the forum, don't force me to see it.

The home page should show threads that are beneficial to new members, not threads that make the existing member smile because of likes. It's not Facebook, it's a forum, and many of the people coming to this site for the first time are looking for help, not to see how well someone else did.

I'm not around that often to know what "petty arguments" means, but yeah, these forums have changed since the time period that you and I joined. Maybe around 2014 is when this new "era" started to escalate?

In fact, I expressed a similar sentiment in the second main bullet point of this recent post on rCubers (On the other hand . . .).

In our day, there was pressure (by the most well-respected members) to make every post actually contribute something to the thread. (Not just make a joke to get "reactions", say an opinion that doesn't contribute anything to the topic on hand, etc.)

And yes, comparing some threads to a chat room, and there is literally no difference in the style of writing. (Incomplete sentences, overuse of chatroom acronyms, etc.)

So the progression threads are popular, let them be found by those who care!
This.

Progression threads are also a good place to ask questions not big enough for a thread
If people don't have a life and have the means to read through hundreds of posts to maybe find some random question being answered, then good for them. But, for the sake of people's time, a good question should merit its own thread so that it can be found with the search engine, tags, related thread suggestions, etc.

Progression threads are also a good place to ask questions not big enough for a thread(and if this was one thread questions would get buried) and also learn from what other people are doing to improve. That being said, I wouldn't mind if they were moved to a separate subforum, as this wouldn't stop people who want to see them.

Back to my original post... The "One Answer Questions.." thread were an immaculate place to look for help without posting an entirely new thread. So, for example, someone asks, "how can I improve finger tricks?". Instead of them having to search through a dozen different progression threads, they could simply get a link to a thread (not visible on the homepage) from the person who had a similar experience.

I'm sorry, this has become a brag spot, not a forum.

Bro has beef with progression threads 💀 , I don’t see a problem with them, I have one myself and it’s just a way to track your progression, as it says in the name 💀

EXACTLY! Track YOUR progress! IDGAF about your progress, I don't want to see your progressive thread every time I open this website! Mod's need to prevent those threads from showing up on the home page, because they're not worth everyone being able to see unless they want to! If you want to see someone else's progress... Go look for it!

Sorry for the double post, but bro made this just to start one of those so called “ petty arguments “ 💀
No... The "petty arguments" that I'm referring to are the ones that pop up in posts. When someone says, "I love solving my Rubik's Brand cube". Then they get bashed by ten other users who think that Rubik's is pointless.

This thread was to get a conversation started that would potentially get the mods to revamp the site. Hopefully returning things to a point when this was a forum, not a Twitter.

good point but not even half of the threads on the article index are progression threads so I don't see the problem

Also this is basically what is happening here except you started another whole thread, there's also a sub-forum for stuff like this AND there's also another thread there talking about this exact same topic, here

Maybe some people have friends on this site Unlike you 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 who want to know their friend's progression and there PBs and that kinda stuff

And that thread accomplished nothing, I figured that this might relight the fire.

You're all missing my point of the arguments.
Bob posts a thread about his favorite 3x3 being the Gan12 asking how he can improve it's spring noise. Two posts later, someone mentions that they love the Gan12, but their favorite puzzle to solve is the original Rubik's 3x3. The next 10 posts bash that person for enjoying their Rubik's 3x3.

The argumentative posts here are staying on topic. We're not arguing about water buffalo, we're still conversing the original topic.

Sorry for the double post once again but how again would I be able to look for someone's progress if there are no progression threads 💀

1. Saying that the mods failed just because you don't like the way something is going on the forums is not in any way fair to them. While I do agree about the petty arguments, this is defferent. If you don't want to see prog threads, then YOU turn on that filter because this problem affects YOU. Same message to anyone else.
2. Petty arguments do seem to be growing in number. I have seen how strict the forums used to be, but I don't see a solution for this. You can't change other members behaviors. I also don't think anyone wants this to be a dictatorship from the mods. Here's the thing: The keyword is PETTY. 90% of these arguments are resolved.
3. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO LOOK AT A THREAD THEN DON'T.
4. If the first thread didn't succeed, maybe it's because it's on YOU to not look at those threads.

There is a way for threads to not show up on the front page.

How mature . . . And no offense, but personally being a member who joined this forum in year 2024 will not understand what it was like here 14+ years ago. And that's what we're talking about.
