Changes to the WCA event list.

Oh man! I've just been maining No-Flip 7 Simul for the last month, and I'm still nowhere near able to do in inspection time. It felt like such a fun challenge, now it feels pointless. I can't believe they're pulling it, just as new methods are getting serious development.

tbh i think everybody here hates clock but comeon wca. like this is just disrespectful to everybody who likes clock and wants to participate in it
tbh ive spent at least $100 on clocks and this is just going to make it go to waste.

fto is actually fune tho because now that i think of it its not reall "replacing clock" just being added. its kinda just like added because its fun. in 2025 we were all waiting for fto to be added and its going to but at what cost lol

also "Running Clock at competitions can be challenging..."
JUST DONT RUN IT IF YOU REALLY DONT WANT TO

by the way the only events that people actually dedicated time to and were removed were clock and feet. feet. feet was removed bcus hygiene but clock for no reason

i do think however that there is a chance that wca might "crumble" to the communitys pressure and reverse this choice but like they shouldn't have made the choice in the first place.
btw most countries have 3d printed clock covers.

i am very angry and angry and angry and angry /s

i really liked clock and now i have a deadline to become worldclass (wishful thinking)
also

most companies have just released new clocks (estar shengshou moyu)
and thi could be a potential lost for them.

chess battle advanced

guys i bet you cant even find someone who supports this and is actually serious

Same - I've been at it for 2 months. I'm still very slow at solving it but I can inspect in 15 seconds, and I got an official full average a couple of weeks ago. It's disappointing that this happens when I'm just really getting into it. But at least it will still be around for another year, so I still have time to try to get better before it goes away.

We are preparing to say goodbye to timed solves.

Timed solves have seen significant interest in recent years, this procedure continues to relatively problematic, as frequently highlighted by WCA Volunteers and Community members. Despite multiple changes to the WCA Regulations, timed solves analysis remains highly prone to incidents. Watching timers at competitions can be challenging, as it often requires high frame analysis and often cubers recording themselves to determine whether or not cubes are properly handled during inspection and during timer starts and stops. Determining whether a timer was stopped in WCA appropriate fashion and seeing a competitor progress through a solve are not easily visible at a distance and substantially reduce the spectator appeal of the event, particularly to non-specialist audiences (such as parents who don't know how to cube) if there is a feasible possibility the solves are legally null and void.

These issues stem from the fundamental differences between timed solves and just solving cubes for damn fun. Timers often rely on electronic hardware, of which the WCA often regulates strictly against in most cases. Removing timers from events strengthens the WCA’s identity as being an organization for three dimensional geometrical twisty puzzles and not electronic apparatuses for other non-cubing related competitive hobbies.

Timed solves will continue to be generally available at WCA competitions until July 18, 2027. The WCA World Championship will then be the last cubing event to feature competitive timed solves. This provides a substantial notice period for the pending change and gives a final send off to timed solves on the WCA’s largest stage.

(FYI, this is just satire. I don't mean any of this seriously)

Unfortunately, I am fully on board with this decision. I have actually been waiting for this to happen for a few months now. I mean no disrespect to Clock mains/enjoyers, but I am glad for Clock to be over. I never really saw Clock as a good event, and always viewed it as a meaningless puzzle compared to the other events. I just never understood what all the hype was about. I personally agree with the decision, but by no means am I glad of the effect this has on the Clock community.

They're really not. Clock is not at all difficult to run. It requires no special hardware or equipment thanks to the pin requirement changes. It's not hard to scramble - certainly much easier to scramble accurately than sq1, 5x5, mega, 6x6, and 7x7 - and it's not hard to judge. And it's no less spectator-friendly than something like 2x2 where it's over before you blink.

And 2x2 has had waaaaaaaaaaaay more issues than clock.
note that regulations 4g1a and 4a1 apply to mega, 5x5, 6x6, 7x7

also lowkey getting worried from some 7x7 and 5bld hate here so i am putting it out again that i know for a fact that 7x7 is not like "just a longer version of 5x5 and 6x6," there are quite significant differences in center building (so much so that i genuinely can't exactly call them similar in any way, the methods are just so different) and additionally the strategy with edge pairing is also quite different; i'm not gonna put another chatwall like i did in the wca forum survey thread. with this i'm also incentivized to believe that 5bld could have some considerable differences to 4bld

after a bit of thinking though i think the only valid point in the statement the wca put out to remove clock was that it's not really a twisty puzzle

If any had to be removed, I would say skewb, 7x7, 4bld, and 5bld should've gone first. Skewb is not that exciting, 7x7 is close to 6x6 and 5x5, and so few people compete in 4bld and 5bld it might as well be an unofficial event. Clock wasn't a good event to be added and I don't care much about it personally but I don't think it was justified to remove it
Ok so I can kind of understand you take for 7x7. However its still different enough from 6x6 to be a valued event. It becomes more redundant after 7x7.
BigBLD sure, there aren't a lot of people that compete, but its still super cool to see and awesome to be able to do. And they are vastly different from 3bld in a lot of regards, not to mention the jump from 4bld to 5bld is crazy.
Skewb is a wacky event but its also one of the more newcomer friendly events, its easy to get into and really easy to learn, so I don't think removing something that gives younger kids motivation to cube is a great idea either.

just my 2c

Clock is easier yet for newcomers to get into in my experience….

So just because you see clock as a “meaningless puzzle”, that justifies the removal of clock??
What about the people who spent HOURS upon HOURS of time practicing clock? What about the painful drills, and weeks of what seems like no improvement, just to try and become good at the event?? People have dedicated their entire cubing careers to clock, only for it to mean nothing because it got removed for what seems like NO REASON. Do people actually know how hard it is to truly try and get good at an event??

I really don’t see the point of removing clock. I’m not actually mad that clock is leaving, I’m mad over the fact that they are willing to put the years of hard work of competitive(and non competitive) clockers to waste. I can resonate with the clock community right now because i know how it feels to spend hours of practice just for it to go to waste. I don’t even have a clock (lol).

I don’t really see the point of removing clock. And i don’t understand the thinking of people who want clock, or any event, to be removed. If you don’t like an event, ignore it.

A bit off-topic, but I observed something:
When people dislike something, they bother to pay attention.
But why would you pay attention to something you don’t like?
Wouldn’t it be better to just ignore it?
Of course there are exceptions, but it’s a common thing i see in social media. When people see an AI slop video, they bother to actually click on the video and call out the slop.
anyway, sorry for my rant, and sorry if it feels disrespectful
