[Help Thread] Algorithm Memorization Discussion

I can't, for the life of me, see why you'd want to learn anything NON-intuitive on a cube if there were an intuitive alternative...

Because it's faster.

That's absurd. How on earth is it faster?

In cases like LL, learning algs is no doubt faster than solving with commutators.
Yes, but intuitive F2L isn't commutator based. In 99% of the cases, my intuitive F2L does the exact same "algs" that your alg-based F2L does.

Just because I understand an alg, does that mean that it automatically becomes intuitive?
If you understand what an alg does, and HOW it does it, and you can understand why you make each and every single turn of that alg, it's intuitive. For example: When you started learning your F2L algs, none of what you were doing was intuitive. You were just learning "This case = this alg", much like we've all done for OLL and PLL.

Read your question again, you clearly wrote "anything", not "F2L". I really cannot see how to misinterpret your question, it's very specific.

Ofcourse intuitive or semi-intuitive F2L is faster than alg F2L.

I am currently using Andy Klises f2l algs. and some of my own. I guess I just fail at cubing? :fp and honestly, a lot of people on here aren't that helpful to people who don't know much haha. JK. What are some ways to help in the process of (1) getting faster at doing moves in general (2) learning f2l and getting a stronger and faster intuition for solving the cube.. and idk just where did most people go after they got past beginner method? I'm not worried about oll and pll I found algs that I really like for that. just the f2l method I haven't been comfortable with. idk maybe I need to just give it more time.

Hey, I'm glad you found my guide :D. I agree though, it is very important to not just memorize the F2L algs, I even say it on the guide. It is best to understand them and follow the corners/edges (like others said), but also to categorize each case so that you realize there are really only a few basic cases and then the rest of the cases are just variations of those. I'm not sure which version of my guide you are using, but I suggest checking out my most recent one because I made some improvements in the categorization of each F2L case. Just jumping off topic for a second: Wow, your website is absolutely stunning! It's so beautiful, I broke down and cried in joy when I saw it.

Ha hAha! Thanks man, spread the word!

Help With Algorithm Memorization

I need a little help with remembering algorithms. Not really remembering but after I learn an algorithm I remember it but only when I see the position of the pieces in front of me on the cube. So if you give a me a solved cube and tell me to do the R-perm I can't remember it unless I see the R-perm done to the cube.

Any tips on how not to do that.

Practice doing the alg maybe 20 times. Visualize the case in your mind. Then put the cube down, basically don't do the alg for 5-10 mins, then do it 20 more times. Rinse and repeat. The idea here is to not only commit the alg to muscle memory but also to long term memory by looking at the case and making the association between the movement and the physical look of the pieces.

You should look for tiggers such as R U R' U' and look for patterns. Some that you could never memorize try doing them so many times so you have it in your muscle memory and also try to track f2l pairs for some algs so you have an understanding of what they do.

...but yeah.
Just take it slow, learn one at a time, and you'll have them done in no time.
Just don't slack off when you do it, because if you keep putting them off, it'll seem like forever.
Have a good pace when you memorize algorithms.

Do the algorithm. Now repeat it until you have it imprinted on your brain.
Most people like to learn roughly 1 alg a day.

I find it easier to learn algs that you're not going to use.

If I learn new KCLL tricks or change my CMLLs, I have to practise them until I can perform them flawlessly and have the algorithm correctly associated with a particular pattern.

However, for stuff like PLL I simply need to *know* it. It doesn't matter that it's sloppy since I'm only going to bust them out when I'm doing CFOP. It's much easier to learn multiple algs this way when they don't have to be 'cemented'.

It's also easier to learn stuff when you know how it works, or you made it up from bits of other algs. Comms for example, can usually be fully known after a single execution.

The more you learn the easier it is to learn more.

Thank you to everyone but especially,

In the spirit of looking for tiggers, the algs on Meph's page are ordered with memorisation in mind and tiggers highlighted, because that's what tiggers do best.

TTFN.

that site is perfect for learning the algs.

I'm a first time SpeedCuber and only just got my 4 puzzles (Mini-Diansheng, Cube4You SpeedCube, LanLan 2x2x2 (the only algs I ever FULLY memorized) and a LanLan 12 side puzzle) yesterday. So yeah..

The way I learned them was by finding patterns. Once you know the basic patterns/triggers/tiggers ;) then it becomes a lot easier (esp OLL). I've created some nice guides that organize the algs into what I believe is a logical fashion and highlight common triggers in different colors.

Check them out here:
3x3x3 Guide - http://www.kungfoomanchu.com/#333speedcubing
3x3x3 OLL - http://www.kungfoomanchu.com/#333oll
Or, you can check out this printable page I made for badmephisto, it contains all his algs in an easily digestible format. You can find it on his website or click this link directly: http://www.badmephisto.com/badmephisto-speedcubing-method.pdf
