Hello everybody,

Just a question about the 4x4x4. How do you train edges step ? Because, I solve the cube in average like that : Center 20s , edges 1 min 30 and 25s for the 3x3x3 step...

Thank's

Guillaume.

Ok... :( ...I'll work that.

Hey Guillaume,

The best way by far to train to solve the 4x4 edges is to solve slowly without a timer and count your number of moves. Try to minimize this number of moves as much as possible, and don't care about the time taken to do it. If you spend 15 minutes on one edges solve, that's absolutely fine!

Then once you have found a method that cannot get any shorter than you already have it, start turning it into a mindless routine. Meaning that you can do it without even thinking about it, allowing you to start looking ahead a bit. Just do slow solves with your method (still no timer) and get used to doing it over and over and over an over ad nauseum...

Then once you have your method turned into a mindless routine, start working on looking ahead harder and going FAST!! Edges is about finding the perfect slow-fast pace, but to get really really fast times (low sub-60) you need to go actually fast for the edges and not really slow-fast.

Try that and see how it works for you, that's the method I used to train edges and I think I average about 20-22 seconds for edges. I've gotten times around 16-17 on really good solves and upwards of 26-28 on my slower solves.

Hope this helps,
Chris

Hi Guillaume,

It sounds like your centers and 3x3 stage are quite normal, and you are having a hard time finding the pieces to pair up... I think Chris Hardwick's advice is very good.. But can you also explain me what kind of method you use for pairing up the edges? Do you pair up 1, 2, 4 or 6 edges at a time?

Hi Joel and Chris,

Thank's for your answers and your advices. I did 1 pair up each times, I know Chris that you wrote an advanced method to solve the 4x4x4 but I was an Idler  . But recently, in the trafficjam, I understood how I can solve 2 pairs at time !! After that, I read your Advanced method and it was that !! How loose your time, talk to Guillaume :D ! Chris, I'm using your advice to train edges step !! I love the cube community ;)

Guillaume.

PS : Joel, what are you waiting for to broke your average and to be sub 14s ;)

I was just going back through older posts and saw this. Now that I do 4x4 speedsolving, I can see that your 3x3 solving stage is amazing considering your pairing edge times. How are your times now with this? Chris, nice post as well, I hadn't read that until now.
