[Help Thread] 2 look discussion - OLL and PLL

Got my first cube today, and have been make good progress with the help of YouTube. Until I get to the yellow cross. I keep plugging in the algorithm that's used in video and my results have been different. Got the L shape, moved it to the lower corner and then
F,R,U,R',U',F'

Sometimes the video is just wrong (because the people who make tutorials are not perfect), and sometimes one might just be misunderstanding its content. We can't tell which of these is the case if you don't tell us what video(s) you have been referring to!

Do F R U R' U' F' if there's a horizontal line: https://alg.cubing.net/?alg=F_R_U_R-_U-_F-&setup=x2&type=alg

Do F U R U' R' F' if there's an L shape, with the yellow pieces on the back and on the right (so it looks like a mirrored L, actually): https://alg.cubing.net/?alg=F_U_R_U-_R-_F-&setup=x2&type=alg

I checked on an algorithm app also and it listed the 2nd one you mention FURU'R'F'
Here is the video

I'm having trouble getting anything solved. Once I get the yellow cross then everything goes wrong. I've got algorithms written down all over, and every video does it differently and I'm not getting their results. I think I'm having trouble getting the corners in place and getting all yellow facing up. Twice I was down to just one corner needed to be rotated in place to be complete, then I ruined it

If you have just one corner needing to be rotated, you have a corner that's physically twisted. Get it back to just the one corner then physically turn the last corner to be correct.
That fixed it, thank you, I'm good to go now.

Hey! I'm Mike, I got into cubing about 2 months ago and my 3x3 global average is about 1:40 with my PB at 1:11.

I use F2L but do the LL with the beginners method. I am looking for some effective practice routines to learn the 2 Look OLL and 2 Look PLL algorithms.

Any suggestions?

For memo, split the algs into chunks of easy to remember moves, and try to look at what the moves are doing to the pieces. For example in a double headlights alg, you take the front right pair out with R U2 R', do some moves, and put it back in. Once you memorize them, drill them to get them into your muscle memory. Make sure you learn M U EPLLs as well.

I don't think there's anything better for it than repetition and practice. Some timers provide last slot/last layer (LSLL) scrambles; you can scramble from your preferred orientation and get a scramble with cross and three F2L pairs already solved, which would give you more last layer practice for the time spent. But F2L has been so important at every stage for me thus far that I think just doing full solves is better.

What I did to learn them was pick my algs and use a cheat-sheet until I had them down. I learned the ones that turn up most often fairly quickly out of self-defense, repeat until I had them all down (and moved on to full PLL). It has been a while and my memory is suspect but I think it only took me 2 or 3 weeks and I don't progress very fast. Drilling algs can definitely help a lot to get them in muscle memory but only handles half the battle, recognition in a real solve is a different animal.

[Edit to add a trick I forgot about that can be particularly handy with OLL: watch what some of the algs do in terms of F2L pairs. Sune, for example, takes an F2L pair out of the FR corner, moves that pair to the back, then reinserts it with an U2. Some of the algs can be easy to remember by what they do until they get embedded into muscle memory]

Just getting back into cubing after not touching it for about 5 years!
I know CFOP with 2-look for both OLL and PLL, but I'm stuck in the 0:40-1:00 range. How do I improve from here???
I would prefer not to learn full PLL since I am also a college student so brain space and studying time are very limited!
Thanks in advance.

just f2l practice. you can be sub 20 with 4 look last layer.

I'm becoming pretty proficient with the intuitive F2L pairing process, but when it comes to finishing the cube the only way I can do it is by using a beginner method where you permute then orient the corners last.

So, I started to learn the 2-look OLL and 2-look PLL. Visited a bunch of tutorial sites and watched a bunch of videos. OLL makes perfect sense to me, but 2-look PLL doesn't.

My question is what happens when I have a PLL situation where I must only permute 2 corners? None of the 6 algorithms give me that option, at a minimum I must permute 3 corners.

The 2-look PLL method appears to only include a-perm (3 corners) and e-perm (4 corners). The other 4 algorithms are for edges only.
Learn T-Perm and Y-Perm
Yeah i cant think of anything else
