[Unofficial] Mike Hughey solves 8x8x8 BLD

i would be afraid of not knowing wich layer to turn. I mean, how do you really know wich layer to turn? Especially on the edges?!
How do you do that?!
I really want to solve the 7x7x7 BLD, but i just never tried, because i dont know how i can recognize the different layers while blindfolded.
That is definitely a scary part of doing the really big cubes BLD. But you should try it - you'd be surprised how quickly you can get where you know where the layers are. Up through 7x7x7, I find that I can pretty much do it without thinking about it. But with 8x8x8 it does start to be a little harder. When you have to turn in the middle, you'll find that it's fairly easy to know you've split it in half, so that layer is easy. Outer layers are obviously easy; the second layer is also easy because you just check that you have only one layer outside it. For the third layer, you make sure there's one other layer besides the outside layer, and for the fourth layer, you either split the middle and go from there, or else make sure you have two layers besides the outside layer. But with very little practice, it gets where you can mostly do this without even really thinking about it - you'd be surprised how easy it is.

Wow thats crazy mike. Congratz on the success. Where were the girls will you did this?
My wife and daughters were at a mother-daughter camp this weekend, so it was an ideal time for me to try it.

Congratulations Mike! You are truly an inspiration! I really loved your reaction at the end! I can only imagine how good that must have felt to finally get a successful solve! I really admire your determination, and of course your insane BLD abilities! Truly amazing job Mike! :D :tu

Thank you for sharing the video, very inspiring!

Regarding reconstructions: for BLD solves obviously the solver would be the ideal person to do this?
From the memo you can write out the full solve.

As we’re talking “Big Mike” here I wouldn’t be surprised if the still knows the memo :)

BTW: how many targets do you have to memo for a typical 8x8x8 solve? (assuming reorientation to solve some centers from the start)
