[Unofficial] Mike Hughey 2-7 Relay BLD near miss

You're speeding up the video way too fast, Mike. :(
I am more than willing to see this video in 10 full minutes!

By the way, you're my greatest cuber ever.
If Maria Oey is like Mother to me, you are my Father :D

that is just incredible, and so admirable that you just chuckle away at the end when it's not solved. i hit the roof when i mess up a 3x3 bld! you have got to get this next time.

i also just don't have a clue how you can sit still for that long.

Anthony, for me a 4x4 is equivalent to 3 cubes
a 5x5 is about 5 cubes, if I remember correctly (just tried twice, I think)
if it grows like that, I'd say 2-7 relay is kinda like 25 3x3x3 + 2x2x2 (9+7+5+3+1)

well a 2-7 is

150+60+8
96+48+8
54+36+8
24+24+8
12+8
8

=552 pieces, and if we say a 3x3 is 20 pieces and they would have roughly the same percentage of solved pieces then this is like doing 27-28 cubes.

Thanks, I'm glad two noobs didn't answer. xD

well, its probably a few cubes less, only because there's usually so many pieces solved on the larger cubes. Still, its a ridiculous amount.

Mike! You are God! :eek::D

David's result was closer than Pedro's. :p David, I think you counted the fixed centers didn't you?! :p
7x7 consists of 212 moving pieces
6x6: 152
5x5: 92
4x4: 56
3x3: 20
2x2: 8
-----------
540 moving pieces... some 27 cubes (3x3)

4x4x4 has 24 centers, 4 of which are expected to be solved. Really it's more like 7-8 if you look for an optimal orientation, but let's make this simple.

5x5x5 has 48 centers, 8 of which are expected to be solved.

6x6x6 has 96 centers, 16 of which are expected to be solved (really it's more because of an optimal rotation, but let's ignore).

7x7x7 has 144 centers, 24 of which are expected to be solved.

So that's:
212 + 152 + 92 + 56 + 20 + 8 - 24 - 16 - 8 - 4 = 488

Add to this the possibility of permuted but disoriented corners on all cubes, and the possibility of permuted but disoriented edges on the 3x3x3, 5x5x5, and 7x7x7.

I don't have time to really work out the true expected value this moment, but I will later. Let's just add 5 total pieces to be safe and add something for this.

So 488 + 5 = 493

493/20 = 24.65 so I say this amazing relay is equivalent (on average) to 25 cubes. If you are unlucky with the expected solved centers it could get to as many as 27-28 cubes, or maybe down as low as even 23-24 cubes. By cubes I mean 3x3x3 cubes of course.

Chris

P.S. Mike is amazing!

Thanks very much to everyone for the kind comments! You all make me smile.

The "equivalent" discussion is very interesting. Chris has probably given the best answer in terms of difficulty. I find that it is a bit hard to compare, though, because there are so many subtle differences between the two efforts.

I used 12 rooms to do this attempt: 5 for 7x7x7, 3 for 6x6x6, 2 for 5x5x5, and one each for 4x4x4 and 3x3x3. Since I can mostly fit 2 3x3x3's in a room if I really want to (although I never do that), it seems like that fits fairly closely with Chris's estimate. The problem is that sometimes I need as many as 6 locations for a bad 3x3x3 scramble, and some of my rooms only have 9 locations, so I could run out of locations trying to double them up like that.

In terms of time, it takes me about 20 minutes to do 4 cubes fairly safely and about an hour to do 10 cubes fairly safely. I would guess I could probably handle about 25 cubes safely in 3 hours, so again it seems like a decent comparison.

So then, by that comparison, it seems like someone who could do 25 cubes in an hour might be able to do a 2-7 relay in about an hour as well. Since I anticipate we'll see 25 cubes in an hour someday, I'm guessing there's a real chance a sub-hour 2-7 relay might be possible someday! That's amazing to think about.

Congrats man well the only other guy who could try something this insane is Dennis.

I'm also don't want my signature to be "TBA" forever

Yes, I figured that. I'm looking forward to seeing your first - it'll probably be under 2 hours!

Gratz Mike! i'm happy for you :D

next time, make megaminx with them lol

I may try this again as is (without the megaminx), since I didn't make it this time. But if I ever decide to better it, I will go for the "true ultimate BLD relay", which will of course include megaminx. (And square-1, and magic and master magic, and clock, and pyraminx, and 3x3x3 one-handed, and 3x3x3 with feet.)
