[Help Thread] Edge Control

2) Are there any new techniques I should learn? I'm fascianted by partial edge
control... looks fun. Is it worth it?
For if it's worth it:
Definitely! Especially if you use 2 look OLL (but it'll still help with full OLL). Because if you can get most of the time at least 2 edges oriented, it's really helpful. In the rare times where I can't do partial edge control (probably because I don't know how to in those cases), I get the ugly dot and it usually adds like 2+ seconds to my times which is not cool :D

And sometimes when you can use partial edge control to get all edges oriented, that's even better. I get good times on those :)

Actually I only find edge control worth it if it gets all 4 edges orientated, so you can use edge-orientated OLLs which are all quite easy or get an OLL skip.

If not all edges are orientated, I just apply 1 of the OLL cases (I use full OLL). It doesn't matter if it is 1-5 dots, or 1-3 edges orientated :). The difficulty does not increase proportionally with less edge orientated. For example, 5 dots (no edge orientated) OLL is actually quite a nice algorithm.

Are there any good tutorials for this (LL edge control)? Or does anyone have recommendations for learning to implement it?

You can look out VHF2L for partial edge control. Dan Harris' site might have it, though I haven't started learning. I read his book on speedsolving and he has it in his book.

If you have the balls for it, you can try ZBF2L for full edge control but hundreds of algorithms to remember!

Is this edge full control?

While experimenting with MGLS and other variants, I found that I can intuitively place the f2l edge while orienting top edges. Placing the corner using a fridrich alg had no effect on the top edges. Is that full top layer edge control?

I wasn't sure whether or not to put this in the answer questions thread.

You should be able to delete your other thread yourself (edit thread, delete).

When you say 'place the f2l edge' I'm assuming you mean inserting a joined CE pair. If you're just inserting an edge, wtf are you doing?

If inserting a CE pair is what you mean, it's just VH, which orients the top layer edges while inserting a connected pair. It is pretty intuitive, but don't let it be an alternative to full OLL. If the CE pair isn't connected, the method is ZBF2L, which orients the top layer edges while inserting an F2L pair in any of the cases.

So you were experimenting with MGLS, you found out you can do ELS intuitively, and you then would insert the FL corner, then OLL and then PLL? You're just doing CLS in 2 steps. It's a slow alternative to 2-look OLL.

MGLS: ELS-CLS-PLL
3LLL: Last slot-EOLL-OCLL-PLL

Instead of doing the last slot and EOLL seperately, you do one half of the last slot and EOLL simultaneously, and then the other half of the last slot.

No way that's intuitive ZBF2L xD

Why are you just inserting an edge? That sounds like beginner's method F2L.

I said it would be ZBF2L if you were inserting an unconnected pair and oriented the top edges at the same time, not if you were inserting an edge by itself.

Edward, you live in Florida, correct?

Judging from your posts. You do not sleep. o_o
I live in the state north of you, and like, dude, you posted when it was like, 3 am, and then 5am.
Get some sleep. O_o

I have insomnia, haha.
I have an excuse.

Cool story bro.

Jk, I just go to sleep late. I'm the type of person that doesn't need that much sleep.

Haha, me too
xD

EDIT: My sleep cycle is messed up.
I sleep during the day, and less so during the night.

Good for you. It's a fine thing to understand. Are you doing one edge at a time?

Is that full top layer edge control?
Not really. Edge control normally involves only small tricks to try to orient edges during F2L, not ever anything systematic/directed.

False.

(I should really be asleep. But never mind that.)

Hey guys, I'm not really sure where to post this (I figured one answer question is not appropriate since others will post algs plus the fact it's more than a simple question). I've tried searching for algorithms on if you have the RUR' with no edges oriented how you can either orient two edges, or all edges (like how in some of Erik's tutorials he blatantly says he has an OLL skip). I have wanted these algorithms for a long time because having the trigger and having no edges oriented sucks for me, as when I do the F RUR'U' F' f RUR'U' f' and then still a COLL, I feel like it takes me even longer.

Well I found a nice alg (with cube explorer) that will get you all edges oriented, and it's quite similar to the no edges oriented OLL #17.

The alg to orient the edges on the RUR' trigger is: R U' R2 F R F' U2 R' F R F'

OLL 17: R U2 R' F R F' U2 R' F R F'

So basically there's one quarter turn different.

I tried to find one for the R U' R' trigger but when I put it in cube expolorer it basically had you do the U' R' F R F' and some other moves, so it didn't quickly orient the edges like I was hoping. Maybe somebody would provide some insight? I really dislike doing the quick F RUR'U' F' f R U R' U' f' triggers back to back, it just feels so slow to me.

What's ROLL?

I will never learn full OLL. Sure I can memorize them all in a few hours, but I don't see the benefit. It's only speed, no extra understanding or fun provided. Right now I know most of VHF2L and maybe 1/2 of COLL and use ROLL when I don't know the COLL. I average 17-18s on a good day and 19-20s on a bad day. I also know a bit of random MGLS and useless special cases. OLL-PLL is a good system, but it's not for everyone. Learn it if you want, don't learn it if you don't want.

Edit:
Kian, No. It is possible, I've done that accidental many times. The many F2L algs affect other pieces in the LL. One flip or swap here and there and you just changed the other pair in LL.

What's ROLL?

if ypu dont want to devote to full oll do what i do use edge control to either orient or unorient all the ll edges its only 7 new algs 4 of wich are solved combining FRUR'U'F' and fRUR'U'f'
