[Help Thread] FMC Discussion

Can someone help me with time management? In most attempts I do I end up only exploring like 1 or 2 DRs and 1 or 2 HTRs...
What are your time splits and what's your target result?

I average 25-26-ish and in most attempts I also only properly check 1-2 DRs, though I generally also find many HTRs per DR.

The usual time split targets are:
- Write EOs by 10 minutes (or earlier)
- Check EOs and find DRs by 30-35 minutes
- Remaining 25-30 minutes for finding DR finishes (start with the most promising DR if you have multiple)

I need some help with RZP to DR in domino reduction. Once I finish RZP, for example, having EO-4e4c, I never have the correct pieces in the slice layer. I need two unoriented white/yellow edges in the middle slice layer for the R trigger, but by the time RZP is finished, any moves to put them in afterward affect corner orientation. All the tutorials online somehow already have both edges in the slice layer as soon as they finish RZP, which is purely coincidence. For example, in the scramble L2 B2 U R U F' U2 B F D B' F' R D2 U' L' D2 F2, RZP is finished with EO-4e4c with respects to the red and orange side for orientation. How can I move on?

In the scramble you sent EO is not solved. That does not have RZP solved. I'll just send a solution anyway

U F' D F R' // EO [5/5]
B' // RZP (4c2e) [1/6]
D B2 U L2 R2 U2 B U2 B // DR [9/15]

This is a quite long DR solution but that's over the point. The method I use to go from RZP to DR is a method that basically works by reducing the cube to a state such that you can reduce the cube to a DR trigger using only half turns. This is the method teached in a youtube video by a channel called HTR corners which is linked bellow. So in this example D B2 U reduces the cube to such "HTR only DR trigger" state, then L2 R2 U2 setted up the DR trigger (notice that this step only used half turns) and finally B U2 B is the DR trigger itself.

Note: the video was made for 4c4e specifically but using the knowledge for 4c2e is trivial.

Wow
but this happened to me twice
what mthod do you use?
Blockbuilding, NISS, and insertions

I started out with two really good solves and then struggled to find anything good on the last one. Eventually I managed to find at least something, but knew it would probably waste the insane start I had to the mean. Somehow i cancelled 8 moves on the last one though! Very very happy with this, FMC is starting to become my favorite event lol

I’m having a lot of trouble with edge insertions. Finding pure corner comms is fairly straightforward, but when it comes to edges, it just won’t click in my mind how to move the pieces around (other than like, setting up to a U perm, or just having M’ U2 M U2 already set up). What’s the best way to learn this?

If you're using blockbuilding, corner comms are preferred because it's much easier to solve all the edges, and edge comms need slices that count as two moves each. But yeah, M' U2 M U2 is the best case scenario. You can also do outer face interchange comms like R' E R U' R' E' R U (this also works with wide R moves) or slice interchange comms like M' U R U' M U R' U'.

If you're using HTR, there's a section in the hitchhikers guide for edge insertions and slice insertions.
