Hi!
I'm Matt,

I have a kinda interesting cubing story, although i feel it is one that many of you will relate to. I remember as a kid i always wanted a rubik's cube, then eventually i got one, then on the day i got it my sister messed it up and it sat on my desk for years unsolved, I eventually learnt in 2016 to solve, it, and bought myself my first speedcube, a white moyu mini weilong (side note, i'm currently looking to buy one cause i lost that one, so if any of you have one feel free to message me). I got down to maybe about 50 seconds with that? i cant really remember my times, but that would be my best guess. I then quit later in 2016, and didn't pick another cube up until the first lockdown in 2020. In that lockdown i learnt F2L, then 2 look OLL & PLL, and probably got myself down to about 26s average. I then quit again, and only solved casually for the next year and a half or so, until maybe about a month or so ago, when i started trying again, and so far have gotten myself down to an average of about 24s, and a PB average of 5 (which i literally just got like half an hour ago) of 19.37.

I can solve all NxN puzzles, but once it gets above 4x4 my times get stupidly slow. In addition to that i can solve all WCA puzzles except Square 1, which i used to be able to solve, but can't anymore. Realistically im only remotely competent at 3x3, and even then not really. Currently trying to learn Full OLL and PLL but struggling a lot.

My hobbies outside of cubing are sailing and gemmology, which i study at university. Feel free to reply or message me, id love to meet other people who cube!

Thanks for listening!
or... reading, i guess?
absolute legend regardless if you read all of that so cheers!

Hi!
I'm Matt,

I first learnt beginners method in 2016, quit for a while, then picked it up again during the first lockdown in 2020, learnt CFOP with 2 look Last Layer, then quit again for a while, just solved casually every so often, and for maybe the past month or so have been doing it again.

My issue is that because its been 2 years since i last learned a new algorithm, I'm seriously struggling with learning any more algorithms cause my current ones are so hard-wired into my brain.

I'm pretty much just hoping one of you lovely people will be able to give me some tips.

Hello Matt. Welcome to the forums!

If you are struggling with learning OLL and PLL, I recommend learning PLL first. Most PLLs are just slight variations of each other, and you don't really need full OLL until sub 15ish (I'm sub-15 without full OLL and with full PLL). Square one can be a difficult puzzle to solve 😁

I did think id learn PLL first, not cause of the algorithms being similar, but purely because there's simply less of them! Need to go back and learn square 1 again cause i do remember it being fun cause its so different

Welcome!
If you are slow at 4x4+ cubes, then try some 2x2! It's easy and faster than bigger NxNs. (That's what I'm doing right now anyway)

I have some unused but good cubes, like my gan 11 m duo, but shipping it to england would be difficult, but if you've got money to ship it it's all yours

I have a square 1 that I'm fiddling with but am trying to focus more on 3x3, but I've solved a lot of NxN puzzles.
Any specific field area of gemology? Don't know much about sailing, but always interested in hearing good stories

Haha no thats okay, thank you, I have some good cubes, i just want a white mini weilong for memories sake as it was my first speedcube, and i cant seem to find one anywhere online :)

No specific area of gemmology, but id love to maybe work in a mine or someweher in the field. As long as I'm not in a laboratory im happy. Still just a student right now though, so we'll see where the world takes me!
