[Help Thread] 2x2x2 Ortega Method Discussion

I advise u to skip CLL and learn EG1 first because there is one solved state for the first layer in CLL and 4 solved states for the first layer in EG1 so u will have a better chance of getting an easy layer.
A fair amount of the time you will also get a solved layer or opposite colours so it is still much better to learn CLL first then moving to the Anti-CLL concept, then learning EG-1, the EG-2

In ortega are 13 algs, who are easy to learn. Watch some youtube video and get notes with the algorithms and draw a simple cubes with the cases. I did this and i learned it for a few days. Good luck

Ok I will try to help. You have two layers on a 2x2. After OLL, each layer will either be a skip, a J-perm (Or any adjacent swap PLL), or a Y-perm (Or any diagonal swap).
Case #1 One layer is a "J-perm", one layer is solved. Move the J perm side up to the top (if it is not there already) and solve it like a 3x3 J-perm or T-perm (Or any adjacent PLL that you know)
Case #2 One layer is a diagonal swap, one layer is solved. Move the Y perm side up to the top if it is not there already. In case you don't know the Y perm it is F R U' R' U' R U R' F' R U R' U' R' F R F'.
Case #3 Both layers are "J-perms". Position both of the bars at the back of the cube and do R2 U' R2 U2 F2 U' R2.
Case #4 One layer is a "J-perm", one layer is a "Y-perm". Put the diagonal swap (Y-perm) on top. Position the bar on the bottom to be on the left side.
Then do R2 U R2 U' R2 U R2 U' R2.
Case #5 This is the easiest case. Both layers are Y-perms. Do R2 F2 R2.
Hope this helps! :)

After that, you just spam solves until you become sub-5, then start learning more algs.

I use Ortega and avg mid 3s and am looking to switch to CLL (Once I finish learning most of EP). Any tips for an easier transition?

What do you mean "easier transition"? Just watch a recognition video and start learning the algs. Use Jperm.net to train your algs, and if you want to use them in solves then start using LBL and just do CLL whenever a case you know comes up

im looking for specific things that people have done to make it easier to go from Ortega to CLL

During PBL there is the case below with adjacent corner swap on one face and diagonal corner swap on the other. I go hunting for a bar in the U face to use R U' R F2 R' U R'. Sometimes the bar in the lower layer. Is it common practice to just turn the cube over 180° to execute or is there a better way to execute this case without a double rotation?

It seems to me a rotation in a 2x2 would be ill advised but I noticed in example solves many people just seem to do a double rotation to execute with diagonal swap in the bottom and the bar at the front of the top face. Thanks,

I just use the square-1 alg for this one. If its J on the bottom but that on the left and then do R2 U' R2' U R2 U' R2' U R2. If its J on top then put the bar on the left and then do R2 D R2' D' R2 D R2' D' R2. Execution is fast and regripless if you turn the 2x2 like a square-1 and is only 2 moves longer.

Wow, These algs are awesome by comparison. The one i posted didn't flow very well for me at and these are most certainly faster for my turning style. Thanks!

...Also, nice lat and long

For diag bottom i just do the double diag alg to put it on top, only 3 moves and wastes less time then a z2 or x2. Diag top adj bottom I just use the square-1 alg with bar on left (R2 U' R2 U R2 U' R2 U R2)

Thanks! I'll implement those algs, it's annoying to have to do z2/x2 whenever those cases come up. Plus they're so easy, one is just known alg->known alg and the other is just super easy lol. Should I learn a move optimal algs for Adj top and Diag top, or are they not worth it over T Perm & Y Perm?
