[Help Thread] 2 look discussion - OLL and PLL

I've learnt 2 look OLL and PLL but have a recurring problem with 2 look PLL. I'm using the six algorithm version and on cases where there are no headlights I need to do a Yperm or Eperm. I never consistently get one of the edge rotations cases. I've slowed right down to check I'm not missing the headlights. Tried different e and y perm algs but it just does not seem to work. I've copied countless YouTube videos but clearly I'm missing something or pll can't be done in 2 looks every time with 6 algorithms... can someone confirm what they do and what I could be overlooking.. thanks...

2 look PLL should be able to be completed with 6 algs: 1st look solves corner permutation (need one adjacent corner switch, and one opposite corner switch alg, i.e T perm and Y perm), and the 2nd look solves edge permutation (EPLLs: Ua, Ub, H and Z).

In terms of searching for headlights, you could alternatively look for the lack of headlights, i.e you have to perform an opposite corner switch. This can be done by looking at the outwards facing corner stickers on 2 sides. If the corner stickers facing the same side are opposite colours for the 2 sides that you check, then it can be inferred that there are no headlights. Otherwise, i any one of the sides shows adjacent colours on the outwards facing corners, then you have headlights somewhere on the cube. Hope that makes sense!

Do you have corners solved after the corner perm?
When I have the headlight case I move them to the back and perform the 3 way CW alg and always solve the corners. The problem I can't get past is when I don't have the headlights and I perform a E perm (as per many Tutorials) I more often than not do not get solved corners.

Same if I try and use a Yperm instead of an E...

So you're having trouble solving corners when they're diagonally swapped. Based on what you're telling us, One of Two things is happening:

A) You're not doing the algs correctly.
B) You didn't actually start out with a diagonal Swap.

To help out with either of these possibilities:

A) Drill the algs. Practice them a lot and make sure you're doing them right. Make sure that when you do either the E or Y perm on a cube with solved corners, you get a case without any headlights. Then when you do it again, from any angle, you get solved corners. I used to mess of my E perms in a way that produced results like yours. But practice and building muscle memory helped.

B) Sometimes, the less friendly PLLs like G perms will look a little crazy, like nothing matches up, and it's hard to spot the headlights right away, especially in the heat of a timed solve. But these are "adjacent swap" cases, and doing a diagonal swap alg (like E, Y or N) will not solve the corners... you'd still be left with an adjacent swap afterwards. So until you can recognize your PLLs from all angles, you really have to check and be sure you didn't miss anything.

There are more advanced recognition techniques that I could recommend, but honestly, they're not important until you learn Full PLL. And by that point, you won't be worrying yourself about things like this anymore.

Thanks for the above, I'll go through the above and make a video so I can watch it back and see the problem!

Ok so I did a bit of homework and maybe this can clarify where I'm going wrong.

So I did a solve and at the end was presented with a case without headlights. I found the case online and have attached it below.

Now.. My understanding from the tutorials is that if you do not get the headlights you can do a Yperm perm from any angle and you will get one of the four edge rotations cases. However, carrying out the Y perm did not provide any of the four edge rotations. This is my source of confusion.

The case in the image does have headlights, so it seems you are confused about what you're looking for. If on one side of the cube the two corner stickers are the same, that's referred to as headlights. Assuming the case in the middle of the screenshot, that's the front side where they are both green.

Oh now I feel dumb! I thought headlights were different to a complete side being the same colour :) Thank you for your all your help!

So i've been trying to learn 2-look OLL for CFOP, but it seems that whenever I try an algorithm (While looking at the text), it does not work. I'm pretty sure I know the cube notations. Am I doing something wrong?
