6. 10.77 U' B2 U F2 U2 L2 D2 U L2 B2 L' U' L2 B' D L2 U' L2 F2 R'

What would you do on this scramble? There are just way too many options. One move square on orange, 3-move and 4-move blocks on green, 5 move block on red, 2 move square on blue.

My main problem was preserving some blocks; I couldn't make a full block without breaking apart what was already solved which means all the SBs I could see in inspection were just "normal". Is there any way to at least keep a square while being efficient with FB?

green white. z2 y R D R' D' r U2 R' U' R' U r' U2 M' r U R'

I am riiight above sub 20(average about 23-27 seconds) and here are my splits(based on when I look at the timer)
FB: around 5 seconds
SB: by this time the timer is around 12-14 seconds
CMLL: after this the timer is around 17-19 seconds
LSE: by this time, Its anywhere from 23 seconds(good solve) to 27 seconds(kinda crappy solve)

what should I work on?

Heh, I guess some things pop up everywhere.

Does anyone ever do shorter algs that break FB, like the inverse of the set up moves in case 2? Or is that not as fingertricky?

Yeah, I think the first one is a well-known alg.

I wouldn't do something like that, but I do sometimes use F moves for cases like F' U' F or F R2 F'.

So following previous advice here I've been concentrating on unlimited inspection + first square. Been practicing this pretty much exclusively, not practicing any other steps at all -- to allow the brain to fully focus on this, and it's one of the slowest parts for me.

The improvement seems to come in steps -- I was averaging 48 seconds for inspection + first square, and then suddenly jumped to 28 seconds, and now I'm stuck there for awhile. Doing 100 of these takes me almost 2 hours, with some extra time spent figuring out better ways to handle some situations -- usually during the night when the wife and kids are asleep.

I do feel I'm understanding the cube better and better, but the progress is slow. Do you guys think this is an effective way to improve? I'm a little worried about neglecting the other steps, but focusing on a single step feels right.

EDIT: Also, the distribution of time is very uneven, as formed corner-edge pairs are the quickest, center-edge pairs usually less quick, and in the rare cases there's no pair at all (x2,y neutral) it takes much much longer. Not sure how to handle this.

I think we are on the same boat (I average 31s, some weeks ago I was averaging 45s), to train blocks I use this website : http://cubegrass.appspot.com/block_trainer/

You can't only train 2x2x1 "squares" but you can train the whole first block with optimal solutions.

You can use jarcs for multiple blocks solutions http://laire.fi/jarcs/

I have some cubes just with the blocks stickers so I can have a better view of my block pieces.

Hope I helped :)

I actually used the same 2 tools as well, but found that planning the whole first block is too much for me -- it would take me forever. Folks here recommended to limit the planning to the first square until that is consistently under 15 seconds.

Also, the optimal solutions are often weird and hard to see and execute, so while it was useful to get some ideas, I abandoned it for now. Oh, and it doesn't use slice moves.

I guess you are wrong. You should plan whole FB as early as possible. I'm sub25 right now and I'm always trying to do that.

You could say that I'm working on the first step of that. Planning the whole FB is taking me several minutes, and it's very demoralizing.
Also, that's not really what I asked.
