[Help Thread] Petrus Discussion and Help thread

Anyway, my main problem is the 2x2x3. A lot of my pauses come up during this stage, mainly because it's so hard to ignore the non-2x2x3 F2L pair (the pair that cannot be joined to the existing 2x2x2). Any tips from the pros? I might upload a video of an ao5.

I also use Petrus, but Im not very good (slower than you). Have you tried increasing your inspection time?? Maybe it will help you see into the 3x2x2.

Im pretty sure this guy is the fastest, and his channel has example solves etc. U should also message him on youtube with ur questions. I will personally make sure he responds!! :p

Yeah I watch his and Erik Johnson's videos. Thanks for the suggestions!

Your times are much better than mine, but I used to get rid of the step like this.

1. Solve a 3x2x1 like in Roux (six white stickers)
2. Solve ANY 2 of the belt-edges to form a pseudo 3x2x2
3. EO
4. mixed Layer F2L
...

Mixed Layer F2L is much better and easier than it sounds. eg. instead of placing a 2x2x1 you can place the other edge and do a D-move, that doubles options for the first block.
Last slot makes no difference anyway

Oh, I do that a lot too. I like it a lot, but it's hard for me to build Roux blocks for some reason (which is why I'm doing Petrus, not Roux :P ).

Petrus help (speed)

Hi guys! So like in the title I solve with a strange modified version of petrus with the only long algs consisting of 4 PLL algs (however If I learned some olls it might make me faster or just change how I solve). So my question is during inspection what do you look for? I just try to find the first 4 2x2 pieces and start but that's it, how can I better use my inspection time to get faster?

I have been considering it because most people use like CFOP or Fridrich but the person I originally learned it from was in the sub 15 range...

I'm no expert on petrus but maybe check out roux or ZZ. Tricks from one method can sometimes be applied to another. ZZF2L in particular is like the same as the last part of petrus f2l. Of course, like all methods, try to look ahead as far as possible.

If someone says 'help me with petrus', replying with 'don't use petrus' is not answering the question. It's a method capable of sub-10 (but probably only barely), so don't discourage it; its just relatively unexplored.

I don't know Petrus, I use Roux. Since both are based on block-building though, there may be some common points.

So Roux starts with building 1x2x3 blocks on opposite sides of the cube. Typically I try to use my inspection time to plan out as much of this as I can. Since I'm still a beginner, that generally means planning a 1x2x2. However, as I improve I want to be able to plan further ahead. Next step would be to try to get to 1x2x3, then to get the bottom piece of the other side into position, and so on...

Porkynator and I can solve relatively quickly with the Petrus method (~12 second average). My signature has some links to Petrus decent singles and averages.

I personally look for just the 2x2x2 pieces. And if that's easy, I check the 3x2x2 or the EO. Sometimes I also throw in cross edges.

But ya, u pretty much already have the gist of it. let me know if u have any other specific questions.

also learn the 7 edges-oriented OLL algs. and finish PLL. That will get u easily sub-15/20 with Petrus.

I honestly think if you use Petrus for a speedsolving method, you should switch to something else such as CFOP or roux

if I posted that, I'd get infraction points

I tried starting CFOP and I just can't get it. But the way I solve there is only 4 cases for PLL (t perm z perm and both u perms) so what I am hearing is just look ahead as far as possible?

basically, but what will help a lot with speed would be to just learn the 7 EO OLL's and the rest of the PLL's.

I guess I'm decent at Petrus (16-18 second averages). Look for your 2x2x2 block (and then your 2x2x3), or if you decide to try using 1x2x3 -> 2x2x3, then look for a good Roux block. Here's how I usually judge what 2x2x2/1x2x3 to start with:

1) Find 1x1x2 blocks
1a) Find easy-to-pair (ex.: 1-move pair) 1x1x2 (this happens more for me because I start only on white, but if you are yellow-white neutral, then you won't have this problem as much)
2) Find the accompanying edges for 2x2x2/other possible pair + edge for 1x2x3
3) Find a good 2x2x3 block to track

You could also do an X-Cross, which makes the 2x2x3 stage much easier (although more inefficient). But honestly (in my opinion), inspection is not the biggest concern in your case; in fact, maybe your LL could be the problem. I think that if I had your time splits for each step, I'd be able to help you more.

I have been really busy with school but I will do that as soon as I can!

Hey so I finally got to do time splits so here it is!

Scramble D' R' U2 L2 F2 R2 F' B2 U' B' F2 D2 R' B' F' D L D2 R' B' F' D L D2 F2 R2 F U' R2

I restarted the time each time and then did the step

2x2 13.49 (normally this step is longer than my 2x2x3 please note that)

2x2x3 23.02

Finishing F2L whilest placing and orienting the last layer edges 21.52

The Last step of petrus 34.85

don't use the petrus LL that Lars describes on his page. use OLL/PLL. search those terms on the speedsolving wiki (link above).

can you also write the movecounts you need for each step? or post an example solve?

Believe it or not I do use OLL/PLL but actually I think I will post an example solve. Through video or what other way?
