Hi, new guy here. I'm curious, how much time and practice did it take before you got to the level/solve times for 3x3 you are at right now?

For myself, it's been about 2 weeks since I learned to solve my first rubik's cube. I'm using Petrus (haven't learned other methods yet) and I'm currently at about 2:30 average solve times (no examining time, using just the 5 basic LL algorithms: niklas, sune, allan, bert, and arne). Being a newb, I was using a solved side up grip and just recently switched to solved side down and started using triggers. My goal is to reach sub 30 one day but that seems like a long way off at this point.

yeah it seems like that for awhile, but it will come, i have been cubing (but not consistantley) since November and i am around 1 minute avg. so it will come, just keep practicing :D

I have been cubing since August of last year. My best average is 18.99. I suggest you learn a different method. Petrus is ok, but it is really hard for a beginner to see the best way to build the the blocks. I think Dan Harris' beginner solution would be good for you. It is located here www.cubestation.co.uk/cs2/index.php?page=3x3x3/beginner/beginner
Also, like Dan recommends on that page, check out the introduction to speedcubing thread on these forums. It is here www.speedsolving.com/showthread.php?t=9

Thanks for the tip and links, alexc. Actually, I like the intuition involved with block building when using Petrus. I do have a ways to go in terms of efficiency though. I'm averaging around 90 moves with the fewest being about 70. Hopefully that number should drop some more once I learn the bad edge cases and PLL+OLL.

I use Petrus's method as well. starting august 2007 - down to one minute avg in about 3-4 weeks i think. another 4-5 weeks for 40 sec avg. maybe 8 more weeks for 30 second avg and that leaves me where I am now at about 22-26 when I'm in the zone. If you want to get better fast, make sure you practice smart. do the same steps over and over and try to take ideas from different steps and apply them in new situations. For petrus, step 1 is the hardest to master. every other step(except for fixing edges) is a simplified version of step 1 with some restrictions. DON'T LEARN ALL THOSE BAD EDGE CASES FROM THE SITE. first focus on being good at fixing 2 from many positions while checking for other bad edges. Stopping to find all of them just to do an optimal case will almost never save time. and pll probably wont be worth the effort until you are under 40 seconds avg. Good luck with petrus, it is awesomely fun.

sorry for the double post, it wouldn't let me edit for some reason.

Just wanted to say don't worry about switching to a beginner method,

Petrus is VERY modular, meaning you can make it as easy or hard as you want, learning and changing small chunks along the way from beginner to uber-master.

:)

I started almost 3 weeks ago, best time is 49 s but my average is 60 s, use fridrich but only know almost all PLL and some OLL, Im an addict :D

...must... .... solve... ...more... ...cubes...

aargh

Question: is 49 s good for 3 weeks of cubing?

November 24?, 07: 2 Days
November 28?, 07: 6 minutes
December 5, 07: 3 minutes
December 24, 07: 1 minutes 10 seconds
January 24, 07: 41 seconds
Today: 33.01

At the beginning of november 07 I was averaging around 2 minutes, just bought my first cube. I averaged ~1:20 at the Netherlands 2007 which was at the end of november. At the belgium open 2008, 2 weeks ago, I averaged ~34 seconds. Currently I'm doing sub 30's.

Progression times really only show how much tiem you have to practice, I get maybe 1 or 2 hours a week to play, and I devote about 1/3 of that to practicing new OLL's (i know about half of them now). I started 1 year ago and my best is 15s....

But some of these people who started november last year and are quicker probably people who have had school holidays etc ;-)

Just practice, it doesnt matter how long it takes you to reach your goal.
