  • Squan

  • 3bld

  • What should i practice for my next comp (Most to least(

  • Skewb

  • Megaminx

  • 5x5

  • ...multi? I haven't even got a success in blind yet but i know how to.. it would be kinda wild to do

Listening to music or even just watching videos on the side (I like watching comedy) can really help, since you don't get bored while cubing.

So, i practiced today. I listened to this tip, and listened to music (arctic monkeys is awesome to cube to) and also watched Monty Python sketches while i was cubing.

On clock i average around 13.5 seconds. I use flip, and i have a pin order that works for me. I don't know if i'm in the stage where i need to learn new stuff or just keep solving and practice lookahead and prediction.

On 3x3 i average around 13-14. When i'm in the zone i can do an entire solve with fast TPS (I average ~7 TPS) and minimal pauses, but my efficiency is something I really need to look at. I think i'll do some recorded solves and slow them down to see my solutions, because at the moment i'm doing a lot of unecessary moves that i'm sure can be cut down.

As for 6x6 and 7x7, the last events i will be competing in, I am pretty awful. I have this mental block when it comes to big cubes, but i think i just need to overcome that by really practicing my lookahead and bar making. I do use reduction, but have tried Yau in the past but it really didn't work for me. I have watched countless tip videos and they have helped but once again, maybe i just need to grind solves. My freeslice skills are also pretty poor. At my last comp i competed in both 6x6 and 7x7 with a 5:08 mean and 10 minute single respectively, so i definetly want to get 6x6 down to 4 minutes at least and 7x7 down to 7 minutes at least.

Clock Update:

First of all, I will be sticking with flip, at least for the time being. After looking at some videos, i have setup my clock to how i like it, and after breaking in the lube, i have gone from a 14 average to a 12 average.

I just did a quick solve, any tips would be appreciated.
I know the angle isn't the best, sorry.

No way your Clock solving is pretty much the exact same as mine! I think just generally getting used to each move so that you could do them faster and more comfortably, not slowly.

Today I signed up to Wiltshire September 2024!

I'm only going saturday, which means i'm competing in

3 rounds of Clock
3x3
6x6
7x7

Unfortunately, I miss competing in FTO.

I took a long break from 3x3. By long i mean, no significant practice since February.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but i went from averaging mid 11-high 12 to consistent mid 14. That’s a big drop, and although I should’ve seen it coming, it was slightly demotivating, soul crushing to see that i had degraded in quality so much. The worst part is that I see the mistakes I’m making, but can’t fix them. E.g - I turn WAY too fast. I don’t lookahead to F2L during cross. My solutions are inefficient.

This is an average from today:

My goal, is by the end of the week, after doing lots of targeted practice, to lower that average by a full second. And my second goal, is to lower that by 2-3 seconds by the time my competition comes round on September 21.

Any help would be very appreciated.

For lookahead I suggest practicing big cubes/megaminx, it dropped my times from 11-12 to 9-10

That is a 9.99 technically sub 10 PB ao5, with a PB of 7.84.

Bad news:

I have to average SUB 5 IN CLOCK to even get in the TOP 10. Why is this event so competitive?

As for the 3x3 front, I am improving. Slowly, but surely.

As for 6x6 and 7x7, well, uh, I've done little to no practice. I don't know what it is. I love 3x3, like 4x4, adore 5x5, but then suddenly 6x6 and 7x7 just feel so much harder. Maybe I just need to practice. No, scratch that. I definitely need to practice, which you'd know if you've seen my past 7x7 result

I can't help you. I can't even help the guy that picked pyraminx over big cubes (looking at you Jayben).

I guess have fun with clock, arguably the 2nd worst event (before you get angry, skewb is by far the worst /j).
You can help by 'volunteering' to be forcibly taken 'picked up' from your home and I'll swap places with you at the competition and make you solve 6x6 and 7x7 for me at gunpoint and 'ask' you to do 7x7 and 6x6 for me

I'm improving fast at clock. I usually finish first cross in 3-4 seconds, second cross in 2-3 and corners in 1.5-2.5 seconds. I think, with some more practice, i can get sub 8 on timer by the end of next month.

I have been looking at your progression thread and you're improving pretty fast! To get fast at flip, you just need to do solves, and a good pin order. I main 7-simul, but I have been using flip for a LONG time. My pin order was:

DR: Match C to U
UR: match C and U to L, basically make an L shape.
UL: Match the L shape to D. This kind of looks like an big block.
L: Match that big block to R.
All: I think thats kind of logical, match the full cross to 12.
The corners do not matter.

I use a similar pin order. Do you have any tips for finding edge skips?

I've only used flip for a ridiculously short amount of time and didn't use this pin order, so I might very well be wrong, but wouldn't it be better to do only UL, DL and DR up instead of all, such that after an x2, you don't have to adjust pins for the next cross?

That could possibly help, I have never done that but it can be helpful.

Yeah, that’s what I’d personally do, and it’s just objectively better, since it saves a pin transition, which is one extra move that could be messed up after the flip
