The Solve Critique Thread

can you do mine? (the post right above yours)
I added recons for fun in the desc
Ok here you go:

Your solution:
z L' U2 L // anti-layer
U (R U2 R' U' R U' R') // OLL
U (R' U L' U2 R U' L) // PBL

Time: 5.16

My solution:
z R' F2 (R) //anti-layer
(R') U' R U' R' U2 R //OLL
R U' R F2 R' U R' //PBL

Your solution here was good but for 3 move faces like this, you can try and predict OLL in inspection.
Also, learning more OLL algs for different AUFs help in spotting easy cancellations in inspection like this one.

Your solution:
y' U R' // face
U (R U R' U' R' F R F') // OLL
y (R2 B2 U' R2' U R2 U' R2' U R2) U // PBL
Time: 6.02

I would have done the same.

It looks like you had a pause between face and OLL. You should plan OLL on easy scrambles like this. You also had a big pause between OLL and PBL which could be shortened if you learn to recognize CP from only 2 sides. Here, if you look at the F and R faces, you see 2 bars which indicates that the U layer is solved.
Nice solution but you had big pauses.

Your solution:
x' y R2 U' R2' // layer
U' (F R U R' U' F') // OLL
U (R U R' F' R U R' U' R' F R2 U' R') // PBL
Time: 4.72

Would have done the same solution but I prefer R' F R F' R U2 R' U R U2 R' instead of J perm

This one was perfect. No complaints here

Your solution:
x' y2 L' U L // face
U2 (R U R' U' R' F R F') // OLL
U U2' (R2 U' B2 U2 R2' U' R2) U' // PBL
Time: 6.43

My solution:
x' y2 R' (F R) //Face
(R' F') R U R U' R' F //OLL
U R2 U' B2 U2 R2 U' R2 U //PBL

Again, learning alternate OLLs for different AUFs and planning OLL in inspection helps. Again, you should learn to do 2-sided(or at least 3-sided) PBL recog and never AUF for recognizing PBLs. Also, when you plan your face, predict where the bar ends up or if there's a bar at all.

Your solution:
z R2 U R' // anti-layer
U (R U R' U R U2' R') // OLL
(R2' F2 R2) U2' // PBL
Time: 4.88

My solution:
z R2 U (R') // anti-layer
(R') U2 R U R' U R' F2 R2 U//Anti-CLL

This was an easy anti CLL for me but your solution was also good. Here too, using an alternate alg for AUF and predicting OLL would help. Without pauses, this could have been a low 4 or even a sub 4

General advice: Learn how to predict OLL for easy scrambles and alternate OLL and PBL algs for different AUFs. Also, try to predict(in inspection) where the bar ends up after you build the face or if there's a bar at all. As 2x2 is such a short event, increasing your TPS a bit goes a long way.
Also what is that cube? I think you should switch hardware. Valk 2 M, YuPo v2 M or MGC are good options

Compliments: Your face solutions are really good for your average(trust me, mine were way worse when I averaged low 5 lol. Check @BenChristman1's critique of a 5.00 ao5 above). Also, that adj swap on the bottom alg in solve 2 is really good. I'll switch to that. Your fingertricks are really good for your average.

Thanks for letting me critique your solves! :D
This is my first critique so it might be hard to understand at some places. Sorry if that happened.

Thank you so much for your advice. I'm usually pretty good at predicting first face bars which I neglected to do in these solves but I definitely need to try to do OLL prediction for at least easy first faces.
The cube is an old wittwo v1 but I've found at my level I get the same time for any hardware. It's funny you say my fingertricks are good when I think they're pretty basic :D
I'll experiment with the J perm alternative which looks like it could be potentially faster than the J perm due to easy triggers and being two moves shorter. The main issue I have with conventional J perm is simply how long the alg is. The movements for your alg are interesting and are related to the Ja perm I use (x R2 F R F' R U2 r' U r U2, executed as l' R' F R F' R U2 r' U L F2)

The adj swap on bottom algs were ones I invented because I did not like the length and limitations of the traditional modified J perm. I made a video on it here

just an ao4, didnt record the 5th :(
It's very hard to see what you're doing. Maybe you could try fixing your camera setup so that the cube is in frame during the solve. Here are 2 things I caught during the video, though:
1. The alg you use for V-perm looks weird, I've never seen anything like it before. I suppose it's somewhat personal preference, but I have a hard time believing an alg with f2 is optimal. Personally, I think
R' U R' U' R D' R' D R' U D' R2 U' R2' D R2
is the best. When I was starting out with cubing,
R' U R' U' y R' F' R2 U' R' U R' F R F
was the most common. Not sure how common it is today, but it's also a decent alg.
2. It was a bit hard to see, but I think you had an efficient solution for this F2L case. There is a very nice alg
(U') R' F R F' R U' R'
It's also quite easy to transform the alg for the other 3 slots (although, personally I would rotate for the back slots).

idk if this thread is still active but if it is can somebody critique my solves and tell me how to average sub 30 seconds if the camera angle isnt too bad?

You should work on f2l solutions, don't priortize not rotating over finding a good solution. One the first solve, on your last f2l pair you could have rotated and did L' U2 L U L' U' L. Try to find these short solutions by playing around with the cube. Also on the same solve, you looked like you wanted to do 2 look pll but used a t perm followed by a yperm. Try placing headlights on the left instead and doing a t perm.

Can someone critique my Pyraminx Ao5? Thanks!

overall a decent average.

Some observations:
  1. Do your top tip with index finger, currently you use your entire hand to turn it.
  2. Use more of inspection time.
  3. Try to do more tips during cube pick-up (start of the solve).
  4. Improve your lookahead into L4E.

Happy Cubing!

Thank you! I’ve been grinding Pyra to try to make finals at my first comp with Pyra in it, so this is a big help! :)

Could someone critique these solves? My goal is to be sub-8 by the first week of April (to hopefully make the second round/finals at a comp).
