The Solve Critique Thread

Hey everyone, I'd like some advice based on this 37.98 second solve. My thoughts on this is that I need to work on my turning accuracy and look-ahead?
[vimeo]56303993[/vimeo]

If you stick with Petrus and finish learning the PLLs, I advise learning at least the H and Pi COLL sets. These will force edge-PLLs (U, H, Z perms) and increase the likelihood of a PLL skip. These COLLs are easy to recognize and very ergonomic to execute, leaving you with a very favorable PLL.

For my serious 2-hand sessions recently, I solve around 90% of the solves with ZZ and 10% with Petrus (whenever the eoline is crap or there is an easy 2x2 block in the scramble). I average ~13 and ~16 respectively. ZZ and Petrus are very similar in stepwise approach, and the movecount for each is largely comparable. The only vast difference between ZZ and Petrus is that ZZ requires zero cube rotations. I'm not going to suggest that you switch methods. But if you ever have a free moment or two, look over this page and do a few untimed exploratory solves. It can't hurt. And if you ever get a scramble with a sucky first block, take a risk and ZZ it out.

And I'm Matt from the bookstore cubemeet by the way.

Good luck!
Thanks for the feedback, and I remember you. I will look into ZZ, but probably not until after new years. When it comes to learning algs, I'm pretty lazy, but I'm sure I will get to full PLL and some COLL's eventually.
With the first solve, I saw a couple of things.
1. White top, green front. Remember that.
2. Your turning seems to be a bit too fast; slow down a tad and focus a bit less on what comes next.
3. Petrus isn't really known to be the fastest method out there; don't want to force you to, but feel free to try CFOP and Roux.
Thanks for your feedback! If I'm competing in any sort of forum competition, I scramble white/green, but I decided I didn't need to here. For turning, would you recommend something like this?
And I also usually look ahead a little bit more, but to be totally honest I was a little nervous making the video. I'm also not looking to be sub-10 fast, just fast enough to be respectable :)

Ok, 5BLD and pandacuber and any other rouxers: im going to give a scramble and my solution with roux. tell me what i could of done different/better.

i average around 40-50 seconds with roux, about 31 with CFOP, and i definitely want to switch, but i want to get my roux average times as close to my CFOP average as possible. all help wanted :)

Well, I don't have a cube near me, but I can already see a few things that are pretty bad. First off, your first block is wayyyy to inefficient, even for a beginner. Try limiting yourself to 10 or 11 moves maximum for the first block. Secondly, I can tell that you do the second block F2L style, which is just inefficient and will slow you down overall. Thirdly, the steps of Roux are in a different order than you executed them in. It goes first block, second block, CMLL (in one or two steps), EO, UL UR, LSE.

does the order of the CMLL steps matter? will it improve my times if i do it the "right" way? also, it would help if you could tell me how you would do it as soon as you get near a cube ;)

Blocks took WAY to many moves. You're doing it too much like CFOP F2L. Aim for under 10 moves for FB, under 15 for SB.
Here's my solution
U2 B' F D' U' F' U' B U2 D B U2 R2 D' L2 B F2 D' B' U' R' U L' B' F2
y' x'
Rw U' Rw2 F' R B' U R U' B // FB (10, 10)
U' R2 Rw' U' Rw U' R U Rw U2 Rw' U' R // SB (13, 23)
U R U R' U R U2 R2 U' R U' R' U2 R // CMLL (13, 36)
U2 M U' M' U2 M' U M // EO (8, 44)
U2 M2 U' // UL/UR (3, 47)
M U2 M' U2 // M-slice (4, 51)

Try to get blocks with as low movecount as possible. Spend time doing slow turning, non-timed, hand-scrambled solves where you just practice blocks. Play around with things, try to learn tricks and stuff.

I agree with your points. You're losing a lot of time in F2L looking for cases (and solving them, for that matter, but that gets better with practice). Look-ahead is always a good thing to keep in mind, but you can't get good at it without tons of practice and slow solves. Also, remember that you can't look-ahead during an F2L case that requires focus to execute, because if try you'll either mess up the case or execute it extremely slowly. Inversely, you must have the case you're currently executing almost to muscle memory before you can free up your conscious mind to start looking for the next two pieces. I recommend CrazyBadCuber's videos on look-ahead:
(1)
(2)

Turning accuracy, look ahead, and turnspeed are all very tightly linked, you may wana make sure each turn flows into the next before trying to burst turn, as, well, it's not burst turning unless your turns flow.

Im a ZZ solver so in the first part i was pointing out the bad edges. Any tips help really and as for OLL and PLL its a weird kinda of 2Look im working on full PLL no

Your tps during F2l is far too fast. I'm sure this is what you already were thinking, but you very quickly insert a pair, then search the cube for your next pair.

@noahaha
We average almost exactly the same. During f2l you are turning way too fast, this causes you to have pauses while searching for the next pair. Try turning at a constant rate with no pauses for a day. I did that and it helped tremendously. Also you did several things like U Ui or U3, this is just wasted moves and could be avoided if looked ahead properly. Your tps is great, but too many pauses to make it worth while. Slow, constant tps solves will help you greatly.

I think he said on FB that he's going to see how fast he can get without lookahead and only turning as fast as possible, but I'm not sure if that changed now.

I wasn't joking about how I have little to no lookahead, but I was joking about trying to get fast like that.
