IMO groups should be completely randomized. All of the competitors with the best times don’t want to speak out with their PBs, as then they will need to conpete against their own level, and possibly being eliminated. (example: competitors A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H are competing. They are listed in order of skill. They are split up based off of skill so that A, B, C, and D are in one group, and the rest are in the other group. A, B, E, and F win. C and D are unfairly eliminated.)
Does anyone out there see what I mean by this?

people asked if it would be skill based matchmaking so I wanted to try but i guess ill make it randomized

(ill setup a poll)

My weekly comp results are extremely outdated (Sub-40 singles were good for me) and I don't have a WCA id. I average 26-27 seconds.

Also, 32 competitors? That is the most I've seen by far in a forum comp. This will take a lot of time to get to the final match lol

For your example, the first group could be A, C, E, and G while the second group is B, D, F, and H. I believe this kind of group system was in the FIFA world cup 2023. The best, the upper middle, the lower middle, and the bottom. Obviously, it is in favor of A and C or B and D to win, but upsets can happen, especially if lets say, C and E are only a 3-4 second difference.

When groups are randomized, that could be worse because A, B, and C could be in a group together and C would have difficult making it difficult to qualify. Randomization is more luck based rather than skill based.

True, but then there is no person to blame for if it is randomized. Let’s stick to the poll and see what other people have to say about it. Another thing is when it comes to bracket play in the case that it is based off of skill, the best cuber plays the worst cuber in the bracket. This is very unfortunate for those that are in pool H, because their timeline is basically 3 matches against their own pool, then a match against a cuber in pool A.
