Hi,

I've been cubing a very very long time. Not any good, and just for fun, but I can manage about the minute mark with some practice.

I have a couple of cubes from the '80s, a storebought I can't find, and this horrible example, which I decided to clean up:

Didn't actually make it any better even after lubing (and I broke off a centre cap, which were very very tight), so I bought a DIY cube from Speedcube here in the UK:

Kit arrived promptly and is complete:

Screws and washers:

This is where I'm stuck! Which way round do the washers go (they are slightly different top to bottom) and what's the order of construction?

I also bought a Cheng En cube, which is pretty nice too, so far.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Thanks for the link. The bit that I need is about 3 minutes in.

Video looks hilarious. I wish there was sound..

Does it make any difference which way up the washers go? One side is more rounded (and shiny), the other is flatter.

Sorry I broke it..I had to slide a stanley knife all round the centre caps to prise them off so that I could take it apart fully. One of the centre caps was just glued in a little too tight.

It was knackered anyway. It locks and pops like crazy from years of use.

Heyy it's andy from www.speedcube.co.uk I'm not too sure on the arrangement of the washers but, I you pm the user joey I am pretty sure he'll know as he uses a type a. Sure he'd be happy to help you out.

No worries Andy..my friend told me it really wasn't important..anyway on with the build:

Finished, time for a play and re-tension:

and the stickers, bit fiddly. I found it best doing them in 3's:

Quite a fun way to spend half an hour. And the cube feels great. Bit light compared to the '80s cube, but very smooth. Not sure I got the tension quite right yet..
