I’ve recently been getting into model-making, and it has been quite easy to pursue since i can pass it off as a “school project”. But yesterday I had an idea:
“What if i made a cardboard speedcube?”
I know that sounds a bit ambitious, considering i haven’t seen anyone do this (aside from an origami rubik’s cube, not a speedcube). I figured cardboard/cardstock would be much easier to work with than paper, since it holds its shape much easier and is nicer to glue together. I’ve always been fascinated by speedcube design and wanted to make one of my own, but I don’t have money (let alone space) to buy a 3D printer so that i could make my own cubes. I was thinking of using a mix of:
Thick cardboard
Thin cardstock/cereal box (@Miloo cereal box mention)
Paper
I think the main challenge for this is making the pieces not catch on eachother in the internal mech, and my solution for that is basically sandpaper. I know that being off by even 0.2 cm will probably cause some undesireable outcomes, so I’ll have to be careful about that.

Who knows, maybe I’ll post a “How to make a DIY speedcube” Youtube video for you guys to follow! This will probably bring back some memories for some of the “cubing veterans” in the forums lol

Let me know what you think! Tips would be greatly appreciated.

ADD MAGNETSSSSSS

ADD MAGNETSSSSSS
If i get my hands on appropriate magnets for the cube maybe

No kidding Sherlock it's a speedcube.
what differentiates a speedcube from a regular rubik’s cube is the internal mechanism. If you were to disassemble a Rubik’s brand and a GAN 12 and compare them, you would see a lot of differences

what I’m trying to say is that magnets don’t make a speedcube a speedcube (in case that was what you were thinking)
