[Help Thread] Pyraminx Discussion

Does anybody have any tips on switching to a top-first pyraminx method from lbl? Right now I average around 7.5-8 seconds on pyraminx with lbl. I'm not sure whether I should learn all the top first methods (1-flip, oka, etc.) and try to integrate them into my solving all at once or learn and integrate them one by one. Thanks.

It is better to learn keyhole first.

okso I average like 7.5 on Pyra, and wish to be faster. I use a method I made called the Bars method (It might be really similar to beginners', idklol) and I want to learn something faster. Any suggestions?

I'm not super into Pyraminx or anything, but I use a method that I made and average sub-6. It's a combination of Keyhole and LBL. It's only 5 algs (from LBL). The main difference between it and LBL is how you get the 1st layer done. Not the fastest, but I think it takes the same amount of memorization as LBL and could be just as fast.

I have a pyraminx but I rarely solve it. The main put off for me is tips. I can finish the main part of the puzzle in like 7 seconds, but the tips take almost as long. Should I do the tips near the beginning of the solve as I go up (I use LBL) or should I do them last? Also, any other help with tips would be appreciated.

First off, it's not a good idea to either save the tips for last or do them in the beginning. What I recommend is to get the 3 tips of the layer you do first done as you do the layer; not before or after, but during. For example, if you have a U' u, you could just do a sort of slice move (the same as usual, but without turning the tip with the body), and that tip will be done. You usually won't even have all 3 of those tips unsolved, so that makes it even easier. Basically, solve the tips as you solve its respective center. Then, for the last layer, do the alg and finish with that one last tip. If you have an AUF, that's great, because you can do the AUF and solve the tip at the same time. You can either do that slice move I mentioned before, or if it's not a slice case, you can sort of wrist-turn AUF and then move your hand up the piece to solve the tip. If you have no AUF, you can just flick the tip either clockwise or counterclockwise like you would if it was a normal turn. Hope this helps, and good luck with the best event ever! :)

I do a similar thing with keyhole. I do the top tip as I'm doing the block, then solve the last tips as I'm orienting centers. That's why I'm having trouble with 1flip. :/

Pyraminx keyhole help

So I started solving pyraminx a week ago and I got down to about 9-10 seconds with lbl. Then I switched to keyhole. I was getting MUCH slower times and with practice ,got it down to around the same average. But I want to get sub 8 times consistently, and I know that keyhole is capable of it, but I can't seem to get my times down. Can I please get practice tips and what to do to get sub 8?

I don't use keyhole, but something super important for any Pyraminx method is that you're solving tips efficiently. NEVER save them all for the end or do them all in the beginning. You should be doing them as you solve. So, for example, if the Pyraminx just has U u' done to it, you can do a "slice" move and solve it in one move as opposed to doing a U' u. You should incorporate things like this into your solve so the tips don't waste any time. I see so many people solve the body of the Pyraminx in, say, 10 seconds, and then they take an extra 5 for the tips. There is no reason these people shouldn't be averaging 10 to 11 seconds as opposed to 15. Pretty much, tips should very barely affect your times. Good luck, and sorry I don't have any keyhole-specific tips.

I'm sub 8 average with Keyhole but there isn't much I can say. It's pretty intuitive. One thing I do different though is how I hold the pyra for the V shape. I hold it with the point down and the flat side up first when I'm getting the two edges

Thanks a lot! I am also tryng to see my whole top and the centers during inspection and ti is helping. I will try to incorporate what you talk about in my solves.

Question about last layer algs. I just use layer by layer. average around 15-20 seconds.
When using the alg R' U' L' U L R or L U R U' R' L' sometimes the Oriented piece just switches from left to right or right to left instead of solving the pyraminx. When doing layer by layer is there a way around that or am do i just do the algorithm again?
