yes: do a zz average of 100.

no but seriously, you are probably already aware of the square+pair assembly techniques. just make sure you are sometimes willing to build the first square with D-layer corner edge pairs matching up with E-slice edges.

also, you can try out different square building strategies per situation to differently manipulate the remaining pair, possibly setting up a 3-move insert, or something like that.

one trick I like is R2 U2 R' U' R U' R2 to solve that messy pair (obv just scramble backwards to show the case im talking about).

peace.

Hello everyone!

I'm a new member to speedsolving.com (i hope i am posting in the right place) ive been cubing for a few months, mostly with CFOP, and now ive been toying around with Petrus for a while trying to find better ways of doing things. After a couple failed ideas, i came across one that seemed to work. While doing step 4b, i was able to OLL while putting in the last F2L pair by just doing a few R U R' U (i put the two faces on U and R instead U and F) The day i did it for the first time, i did it a few more times without trouble, but now i cant seem to do it anymore. Has anyone experimented with this at all/can help me develop this step?

Thank you kind sir!

Why in the world would anyone learn all 57 OLLs??

Has anyone messed around with influencing the orientation of edges while block-building?

Petrus method, how to improve times?

I started serious speedcubing about 2 months ago, and these are my times using the Petrus method.

Generated By csTimer(www.cstimer.net) on 2012-10-31
avg of 5: 39.636

Time List:
1. (34.304) L2 F B2 R L F U D F2 U F2 L R B2 R' L2 D' U' R2 U2 L' D2 R B D2
2. 40.824 B L F2 D2 B D2 F2 L2 U2 D L B L2 U' F U2 B D L D' L2 R' D' F' R'
3. (52.496) L F B2 U' D2 F' D' L R2 D' L U' B' R2 B2 R2 U B2 F L2 U R' F U' B2
4. 34.404 L2 D' R B U2 R2 U' F L' R B' D2 L' U2 F R' B F R B2 D2 L' R2 B' L'
5. 43.680 U B R' U2 D' F2 L2 B2 U B' L' F R B2 U' R' L2 B2 R' U2 D' B R B' R'

The breakdown for the times is usually:
2x2x3 block: 15 seconds
2 layers with edge orientation: 15 seconds (I solve the cube intuitively up to this stage, with no algs)
last layer: 12 seconds (with Petrus 5+6)

My last layer recognition is horrible, and I will improve LL times eventually, but how to be faster at block building? I find myself pausing a lot to find the desired pieces.

I don't use Petrus as my main method, but I average around 20s with it.
It's absolutely normal to have pauses during blockbuilding at the beginning, it only gets better with practise (maybe you should try slow-turning solving to try to improve it).
Judging by your breakdown, I think you should improve a bit on the orient edges and finish F2L step. If your problem is the F2L building, you can try some < R, U > scrambles (on qqtimer there is this option) or you can learn some tricks (like R2 U2 R' U' R U' R2).
For the last layer, if you want to improve you can learn OLL (7 algorthms) and full PLL (21 algorithms) and later COLL (42 algorithms) and EPLL (4 algorithms that you should already know, since they are also PLLs).

Keep on with Petrus, it may seem more difficult to get faster with it than with CFOP, but block building is in my opinion superior, when mastered!

So, choices, should I switch to Petrus or stay with CFOP? What are the "Pros" and "Cons" of each method. I currently average around 1 minute, so will Petrus make me faster? Also can you try Winter Variation, for OLL skips.

Petrus won't make you faster, but you should learn it just for fun since it will teach you skills that will come in handy later.

Re: Petrus Home Thread

Play around and look at block building examples. Oh and the commonly repeated word, practice.

So tips for block building, and witch WV algs should I learn (if any)?

I average sub40 using Petrus, so I'm not the fastest of speedcubers yet, but I'm getting faster (I've been speedcubing for two and a half months).

Check out the block building techniques on the Petrus website: http://lar5.com/cube/blox.html
You can also discover new tricks as you play around with the cube.

Instead of Winter Variation, I suggest you learn the Petrus 5+6 from this index: http://lar5.com/cube/yMain.html
The 8 recommended sequences are especially important. After this step you only need to do EPLL.
