Would x cross be helpful then
Coming from the guy who does x-crosses when they're not even good, here's what I have to say.
X-crosses are a funny situation.
You form the cross and one pair at the same time.
I usually try this when I see that I can preserve a first-layer corner while making the cross, but sometimes, it turns out for the worse.
Take this, for example:
Scramble: B2 F2 D R2 F2 D' U R2 D' U2 B2 F2 U R B2 U B D2 U' B2 R2 B2 F' U' R.
Just to let you know, I use white/black cross. I replaced white with black on my cube.
In the UBL position, there is a first-layer corner that is already paired up with the UB edge.
Alternatively, for other crosses, there is the UFR-UR pair and the DFL-DR pair, but we’re sticking with the UBL-UB pair.
Now, we look for the remaining cross pieces, and aside from the two we can blatantly see in the top layer, the remaining two are in BL and DB.
Knowing the relative locations by which the edges must be placed, I know that the black-orange cross piece can be brought to its relative location to the black-green edge WHILE PRESERVING THE PAIR with a
y R2.
After doing this, you’ll see that along with preserving the pair and solving one cross piece by relative location, we have another cross piece ready to be inserted by relative location with an F’ move. But wait!
That would destroy the pair we are preserving.
Thus, we can get it out of the way before inserting the black-blue cross piece. I’d to this with a
D2’. Since the pair is out of harm’s way, an
F’ move inserts the black-blue edge.
Now for the preserved pair.
Since this pair is directly beneath its target position,
L2 would suffice.
You should have something resembling this:
Now we flip the cube over with an
x2 rotation, and we look for the edge that corresponds with the corner (red-black-blue) we preserved. After doing a
y rotation, I can see that the edge has already been placed. Lucky for us, doing a final
D' move aligns the cross, and the x-cross is solved.
This is something I’d actually do in a solve.
