I have a very similar problem that slows me down quite a bit on certain F2L cases, since whenever I see those cases, my fingers panic slightly. But yeah, I think it is just a matter of practice with slow and careful turning before getting the hang of it.

When i don't see pairs in front of me and on U layer i just take out the slot from BL or BR using my intuition. I separate them without using algs. I just trying to separate than as good as i can so i can perform insertion without y rotations. I still can make mistake but I think it's very good method.

My F2L lookahead - comments/suggestions?

I know there are other threads on lookahead, but I wanted to share my own (my biggest slow-down) and see what you smart/experience ppl think!

Specifically, lookahead during Fridrich intuitive F2L: Typically, when as I'm finishing an F2L pair, I look for a corner cubie for the next pair. When I identify the target edge cubie's colors, I seem to start looking at the 4 second layer edges to see if it's there, then I look at the 4 LL edges (I don't know why - my eyes/brain just naturally go to second layer first to search for some reason). I also find that often I will "second-guess" myself and double check to make sure I have the right edge cubie once I find it (thus resulting in a slow-down by a few seconds - I alluded to this before in one of my previous posts about "trusting myself"). There are some obvious things I need to fix here (ie, not second guessing and just trusting myself) and some not so obviou (to me) and maybe just things I just need to work on.

In any case, how do you find your edge pair after you spot your target corner cubie? Do you tend to search in second layer first then LL edges? Am I missing an obvious better way to lookahead? (I know about going slow, metronome, etc... to practice - I'm looking for more details on what I should be practicing I guess)

Thx! You're all awesome pplz btw!

Make sure you keep the cube a decent distance away from you so you can see most of it already. I can automatically indicate whether theres a 3-move case in which case i would do those first while looking at corners in the bottom layer. While i finish one case and know my next corner, I glance at the top. If you remember that you already used a red-blue pair, and you see red-yellow and red-unknown, you won't have to check to see that it is red-green.

when i do my f2l i look for one pair that's easy to do. i just randomly pick and insert it in the right spot. i do cross on white, solve yellow. i look for a piece with white, see what colors it has, see if theres an edge with the color that's near it. if not, i try to see if there is one thats near it. then i start looking for the edge if i cant find a pair that's next to each other but isn't matched.
i guess u just have to trust yourself so that u dont have to double check. i did that when i started f2l.

try to position the cube so that u can see at least 3 sides at once. memorize the color scheme so u know where to put the pair after it's paired up

I tend to spot for the edge first, usually during the preceding pair. Then I find the corner.
Habits from Roux evidently, where I automatically place the edge into DF or DB... However it's fast and my F2L is very smooth...

I'm having similar problems, things that take like 5 moves I do in like 10 moves but those 10 moves are faster than my 5 moves if that makes sense, needa practice my lookahead too, i have to re-inspect for every f2l pair.

try to figure out what you are going to do with a pair and be able to not watch it while your inserting it. You shouldn't be looking at what you are doing, but what you are going to do next. Thats how i look at it
