So i've decided to learn 2x2 CLL. It's gonna be really easy because (a) I know some algs from ortega and (b) some of the algs are from 3x3 PLL. I'm not gonna put too much time into it but I will finish learning the algs eventually.
I've also solved the 5x5-7x7 for the first time and it was really fun. I'm not going to practice them on a regular basis (yet) but I will some time in the future. After solving them, I feel like I have already improved on 4x4. They're all like 4x4, except bigger, harder, and slowed down. 4x4 seems like nothing compared to them now 😅

Update

As far as 3x3, I am close to breaking the sub-20 barrier but still struggling a bit. I feel like i've been in the same place for awhile. I know almost every PLL case. I have noticed that I do waaay to much solving and not enough deliberate work. As far as PLL goes, I am usually fine with drilling those algs, but I need to improve my F2L.

Any tips??

I am close to becoming sub-2 on 4x4. I get some sub-2 times but my solves are usually around 2 minutes. I'm just grinding solves rn to get into the flow of it.

I am getting a bit better at intuitive L4E on the pyraminx. I don't practice it a whole lot because it is one of my side events but I am slowly improving.

For F2L, learn how to separate and solve every case intuitively, it helps a lot.

Lookahead, trying to plan the next pair while doing the moves for the previous one, is normally started after sub 20 but you can look at that

Thanks for the feedback!
No problem. I had to go through the stage you’re in without being on any server or knowing any cubers that could give me feedback. So I understand how much people want the help so I try my best to be concise and give the best piece of information possible (rather than 10 different tips). :)

I just realized that I have not updated this since September, so here is where I am:

3x3: Still aiming for sub-20... I get sub-20 solves often (like 19 or 18 seconds) but it isn't my average. I have a few more PLL algs to learn.

2x2: I don't practice 2x2 a lot, I haven't improved. I said I was going to learn CLL. but maybe after I get more comfortable with 4x4.

4x4: I just returned from a "break" of cubing, so I haven't done 4x4 lately. I think I average 2:00-2:15.

I haven't updated my progression thread in awhile because I have not been able to cube much in the past 2 months. Now that I'm less busy, I'm going to try to get back into the habit of regular practice.

Yes, I'm still not fully sub-20, but I've noticed that my solve times are generally lower than they used to be before I had to take a break from cubing. Now, they're generally in the 19-21 second range, as opposed to being in the 20-24 second range.

I'm trying to brush up on my full PLL as I have not learned all of the algorithms yet. I have 6-7 algs to go (mostly g perms and n perms).

As of 4x4, I haven't touched one in a long time, but I will still work towards my sub-2 minute goal.

I felt that my skill got better after a break too.

mainly look ahead

I feel that my "speedsolving brain muscle" is more relaxed so I can think more logically during solving and make better decisions, even at subconcious levels

I'm just practicing 4x4 and mega lately and I already broke 4x4 single pb

How do you record your splits?
Go into CS timer and click on settings. On the left where it lists categories of settings, click on timer. Something that says multi-phase should be at the bottom of the list of timer settings. Change that to 4 (or the number of splits of your choice). I do 4 so I can track my cross, f2l, oll, and pll.

That might be good for some practice but you shouldn't do that all the time, it'll really slow you down. Pressing space(or touching the screen, I don't know what you use) 4 times across a solve really adds up.

Yeah I've only done it once or twice to see what I need to work on. It was just a coincidence that I happened to get my pb at the time by doing time splits.

Time to update this after a few weeks.

For 3x3, I’ve decided that to reach my goal of sub-20 is to do more deliberate practice rather than spamming solves. I have been working mostly on cross and PLL. Cross is probably one of my weakest spots for the level that I’m at, and I am already seeing improvement.

For cross, I have done a little bit of practice with two separate drills (both I got from a BrodyTheCuber video). I have been counting the number of moves it takes me to solve cross (and making sure each solution is under 8 moves), and in a separate drill I have been trying to solve cross with my eyes closed.

As far as full PLL, I’m almost done learning it. I also drill some of the algs I already know, so hopefully it will take me less than 2.5-2 seconds to solve each one.

I might try to go to a comp this summer, so I want to become sub-20, brush up on my 2x2, and become more fluent with 4x4. I’ve been putting most of my energy into 3x3 in order to reach sub-20 though.

anyway, that’s where I’m at right now and I’m very open to (and would greatly appreciate) any feedback/help/tips!

BTC does have some really good videos!
good on ya for doing purposeful practicing

BTC has some good atuff on F2L as well
which is probably fhe slowest part of a solve

in your Cross drills (and start of any CFOP solves;'), try to get to where you memorize the moves to solve cross
PLUS ONE F2L PAIR
it's both easier and harder than one might think haha GJ & GL

Thanks for the tips! Once I’m comfortable with solving the cross completely without looking, I’ll learn how to memorize one f2l pair. That will definitely be helpful because I noticed that my first pair is always the slowest because it can take some time to find.

I think it's probably better to be tracking your first pair during cross instead of trying to fully predict first pair, I think this is more advanced.(you could start doing this later though). I average 15, so correct me if I'm wrong.
