Do you have bad solving days? How do you deal with bad times?

Yes. This happens to me too (particularly when I do 3BLD)

Some days I'm sub-1, other days I DNF 10x in a row... sigh.

just new in cubing area, but i also have that feeling. i solved my 3*3 still 2 minuets...but the worst now is almost 3 minutes,it depressed me.
sad.

Do you ever have one of those days?

I consider my best days normal days and every other day a bad day, for 3x3. For stuff like feet or BLD, there are days when I just can't do it.

There are times that I am completely out of focus and my lookahead is screwed and i get 30+ sec averages. I usually stop solving for the rest of the day, and tomorrow usually, my speed will be back to normal again.

Happened me last week. I broke all my records, including my PB single, which I thought will stand for a long time. Another time, just a week before that, I made like 25 solves. 12.xy times are rare for me, but in that session, I did 3 times.

I had this day when I was on Holiday and i thought my times would drop heaps and i was just timing solves with an iphone timer so after i finished one of the scrambles i started and i got a double x cross a multislot an easy OLL and and a PLL skip which gave me an extremely lucky solve and a new PB almost halfing my original best time which was 12 and this solve got me a 6.719 O.o i mean thats just lucky cos i still average around 20 ( also the PB average was 13 or 14 cant remember)

Good times.. Then goes to bad?

Hey, well I'm been cubing for the past week really seriously like 300 to 400 solves a day.
I have a brand new cube lubed, I was averaging around 16 seconds. Then out of the blues one day I just got bad averages thought it was only going to be for one day.
I have been now stuck at a 17.50 to 20 sec average. It's been this way for about 3–4 days.
Is this normal? Why are my times not as good?

1. examine the situation and identify the problem
2. try to counter the problem by focusing on it
3. make sure nothing is affecting your solving

for example, if you think u just cant see pieces well, turn on the lights and focus hard on looking ahead
if your fingers arent as fast, drill some PLLs or warm up your hands
try cubing right when u wake up, or before going to sleep. you might get different results
is something stressing you? got a lot on your plate? having trouble focusing?
listening to music could help, or just take a few days break to regain your motivation. you solve a LOT
make sure youre comfortable too, grab some pillows and put your feet up lol

What I tend to do is write down the bad time and once I have five, I make an average. Then I get out a store-bought cube. and I (try to)lube and tension it and solve and solve and solve until I get under 30s. I then take a break and solve and solve and solve until I get even better. Then I go back to my speedcube and my times go back to normal, sometimes even improve!

Hahaha just caught this rage on tape. I've had worse, I once threw the cube and all my center caps flew off, and even lost one. Yes I have anger problems :P

Unusually Bad Times

Hey! I've been averaging around 35 seconds on a Dayan Zhanchi, and I did mess with the tensions a little bit so it could cut 45 degrees on more sides, and I can't get good times anymore. I've been averaging over 42 seconds yesterday and today, and the cube feels uncontrollable, which has never happened in the past, and my fingers move in kind of an awkward way and not in a fluid/natural motion. Is the problem with the tensions, or am I just having a bad day? Thanks!

It could be you need to slow down your turning a bit. If you solve the exact way you did when you were average 35 on the different tension then you might be overshooting/locking up more since the cube is more fluid. When a cube is uncontrollable you can either change the tension or try to adapt to the style of turning the new tensions require to be fast. When adapting expect your times to be worse just like any other time you try a new thing like learning an alg. Give it some more practice and think about your turning and not the cube and if it still isn't getting better then try adjusting the tensions to better suit you further.

I don't think anyone could give you a definite answer to that. Personally, I believe it's the tensions, considering that you talked about how the cube feels uncontrollable. If you think you're just having a bad day, I recommend you continue to use it for a couple of days. If you don't start to get better, adjust the tensions to something tighter or use a more controllable cube. Good luck!
Cool to see another cuber from SC, too!

Alright, thanks everybody! I'll be sure to try that! A lot of my questions like this one can't really be answered with one...answer, so I didn't want to have many people try to answer in the "One Answer Question Thread." Also, if you have a more difficult question, you're more likely to get a better response here than when you'd only get one answer.
