COLL Recognition Help

Hello, I am a zz user and I sub 35 seconds with beginners 4lll. I wanted to start learning coll, but I have a hard time recognizing which alg to use. Is coll orientation dependant, or am I missing something?

Also, if you use ZZ surely you would have a 3LLL?

Firstly, what do you mean by 4LLL? For ZZ you should at least have at most a 3 look last layer before considering COLL: 1. Orient corners, 2. Permute corners, 3. Permute edges.

Secondly, I don't know about others, but I have different systems for each of the corner orientation cases. When I started out, I would turn the top face to that fixed position, and recognise from there. Over time, I began to recognise cases from different angles, but that just came with practice. I found it helped to figure out my own recognition - look at each case and try see some distinguishing characteristic that sets it apart. Mostly I look for patterns of matching stickers or opposite stickers. If you spot something distinct on your own, I think it will be something easy to spot in solves.

Lastly, remember that COLL recognition is exactly the same as CLL recognition for 2x2, so if you're stuck search for 2x2 CLL videos, skip past the algs and just watch the recognition parts. Chris Olson's videos are helpful.
