[Help Thread] Algorithm Memorization Discussion

I just try to perform the algorithim over and over again until I can finally do it without having to look the paper for guidance. I really just try to get some muscle memory in my hands, so when I see the situation, my hands just perform the alg without thinking.

I memorize the algorithm in notation, and then execute it until I don't have to think about it.

i would recommend learning the 2-look algorithms first, but if u wanna jump right into full fridrich, what i do is learn 1-2 algorithms each day by repeating it until its in my muscle memory. Before you sleep, pick up the cube and see if u still remember how to do it. prisma puzzle timer also has scrambles meant for fridrich learners.

Thanks, I'll try the 2-Look first!

I like to learn by triggers, like badmephisto suggests in one or two of his tutorials.

Like with F (R U R' U') F' the part in parenthesis occurs in many algs, which actually means I already know part of many algs. Such as f (R U R' U') (R U R' U') f'

Also just repeating it many times, in between doing other things as well. I don't try to rush it too much, it takes me about a day to remember an alg without looking but it takes a little longer for me to truly commit it to permanent memory - so I just keep using it until it becomes totally natural and make sure I refresh it while I learn other algs too, because I've had a new alg knock out old ones from trying to progress too fast before.

how to make memorizing algorithms easier?

im trying to learn the cases for f2l, i just started speedcubing, how do you guys memorize algorithms when you guys learned?

I didn't really memo F2L or F2B or 2x2x2 as algs, it just kinda sunk in after I explored it.

For actual algs to learn I just kept doing it rote until I knew it. You get a lot better at it over time, over 100 algs later and I can sometimes 1pass the ****ers.

do it a few times then do it a few more times watching the cube and watch how the cube looks as the alg progresses.then try to do as much of the alg as you can without looking at a sheet over and over untill you get it. I do (or i guess did) one pll a day and now a oll and its opposite everyday.

for learning algs, i would start with the 2 look PLL and 2 look OLL algs. f2l can be done intuitively, much like building a cross is intuitive. there are algs, but yeah. . .
for learning PLL and OLL algs, make sure you learn notation. learn it well. then look up some algs, badmephisto is good for beginners. just google it. and then do the alg REALLY SLOWLY, try to figure out what is going on. do it on a solved cube so you know what you're doing. once you are comfortable doing it really slow and kind of have a feel for the alg, start trying to memorize the first couple of moves and use the alg to cheat for the rest. slowly incorporate more and more moves until you have it memorized. perform it many many many times. like, learn an alg and take a dump. the whole time on the toilet, just spam the alg. keep doing it until you dont have to think about what move is next. it will just get burnt into your muscles. then whatever alg you learn, sleep on it and try to do it the next day. if you have to think about it, you probably didnt spam it enough times. just learn slowly, maybe 1 PLL every couple of days. then once you are comfortable with the flow of how to memorize, maybe 1-2 algs a day. for me, IM OLD, i can only do an alg every couple days or else i forget lol.

oh ok i learned an intuitive system but i read somewhere that they used this to make learning the f2l algs easier, i guess ill just have to learn on my own.

the f2l algs are created from intuition. there are a few f2l cases which are slow intuitively (too many moves, cube rotations, etc.) for which there are algs (short move count, and more importantly, typically eliminates the need for a cube rotation or awkward insertion). learning the f2l algs for the slow cases would come much further down the road. f2l algs are more beneficial for people on the road to sub 15. learn f2l intuitively and keep practicing it. you will eventually find out what cases require high move counts and take you forever just to complete one pair. work on learning algs for PLL and OLL. seriously, who would want to learn more than 75+ algs?

what do u mean by 1 pass?

You should learn intuitive F2L first and only learn algos for PLL and OLL, then when you've gotten sub-20 or something along those lines consider learning algs for F2L but you don't need F2L algs to be fast. Also, it takes less time to get faster if you practice using intuitive F2L.

Personally, I would learn intuitive F2L, it's more beneficial in the long run. Ar for learning OLL and PLL algs. Try learning 1 or 2 each day. Take it little by little and you'll eventually know them all.
