A few hours ago, I recieved a package from 9spuzzles.com. The order included:
2 Type D 3x3x3s (one white and one orange-red cube)
1 White ES set
Type Ds:
From what I know, they are the old YUGAs with the better screws and springs. The two cubes feel entirely different, although the core, cubies, and centers are exactly alike (haven't taking out any screws or springs yet). Both sets of screws were tightened all the way, and the inside of the cube was wet with their own lube. I loosened the white cube's screws by 1/8th of a turn, and it is the best cube I've ever used. It doesn't cut corners quite as well as my type C or really broken in storebought, but that doesn't matter because this cube has almost no turning resistance, is much smoother than my other cubes, and locks up less than any either of my other cubes. It isn't "crispy" like many people said, but it is still amazing nonetheless.
The orange cube is very strange. First off, it's not the same color I ordered (I asked for green). Secondly, the color scheme is VERY strange. White and orange are opposite, blue and red are opposite, and yellow and green are opposite. If white is on top, yellow is in front and red is to the right. It feels rougher and more crispy than my other cube. It almost can't cut corners, but this doesn't seem to be a problem, as it locks up less than any other cubes except my new white Type D. I removed the old lube and used silicone spray, and it is now more crisp than before. It has more turning resistance than my white cube, but this doesn't seem to affect solves much. I can't compare solve times with the white cube because the color scheme is trowing off my recognition too much. Why are the color schemes different?
ES 2x2
White is replaced by black, and orange by purple, like all white ES cubes. It is fairly loose and although the turning resistance feels high, it turns quite easily. At first, it had trouble changing turning direction, but this changed a bit after about 3 solves and a little playing around with the cube. It is MUCH better than the black one I owned before. Does the color of the plastic really affect this cube?
ES 4x4
It seems fine, but my main concern is with how tight the cube is. I know it loosens up over time significantly, so will lubing it decrease how long it will be ussable? I'd just break it in normally, but it's just so annoying to solve, and I only solved it once so far. Also, the yellow edge is much tighter than the rest of the cube.
ES 5x5
It's very loose. Too loose maybe. It's difficult to move only one layer sometimes because other layers turn with it. I noticed that the center caps are removable and have a screw, just like any 3x3 I've ever seen. Does adjusting these screws work like adjusting a 3x3? I'd try it, but I've heard that turning the ES screws really mess up the cube, and it is almost impossible to reassemble. This is my first 5x5, so I can't compare it to anything else. I've only solved it once, because I wanted to try solving it intuitively.
For what I'd rate each cube:
Type D white - 9/10 could lock up just a little bit less.
Type D orange - 8/10 needs to improve corner cutting and lockups, lossening it a bit would probably fix this easily though
ES 2x2 - 8/10
ES 4x4 - 5.5/10 for now, although it seems to be loosening up pretty well now
ES 5x5 - 6.5/10 for now, will improve if it tighens properly
