I borrowed my friend's 5x5 for the heck of it and decided it would be a good time to expand my repertoire of puzzles

I learned how to solve in about 2 days, using my knowledge of 4x4 and some online help for final 2 edges. My method is reduction: centers, first 8 tredges (from bigcubes.com), final 4 tredges, and 3x3 stage

Right now (it's been a week) and I'm averaging around 3:50ish

Time breakdown:

Centers: 60-80sec
First 8 tredges: 60-70sec
Final 4 tredges: 40-60sec
3x3: 45-60sec

theoretical average: 3:25-4:30

What are the most important steps to focus on when speedsolving the 5x5?

I suck at the 5x5, I learned it at UCSD competition, and I played with Ron's V-cube, I can solve it in like 4:40 lol.

I average about 2.00-2.10. I would say work on last 2 edges. For your 12 edges try to aim for about 90 seconds and centers in 60 seconds and 3x3 in 30 if you average sub 20 on a 3x3. My breakdown is like 40-60-25. I do reduction in sub 1.30 sometimes, thats when i get times around 1.50.

I can get centers in about 55-1:15. Not a great range but I can still get sub-3's very very rarely. I want to switch to a new edge pairing method. One wing edge at a time is very tedious and the constant scanning for single pieces is annoying at times. Levi, what edge pairing method do you use?

Free style 1 at a time, basically big cubes method. I have tut on my youtube page :)

3x3: 45-60sec

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who sucks badly at the 3x3 stage.

The 3x3x3 stage speed is all a matter of perspective. I average a little over 45 seconds on the 3x3x3 stage, despite averaging 3:00 overall, and I actually am quite happy with it. I figure if I average 30 seconds with inspection on a regular 3x3x3, and I can get 46 or 47 seconds without inspection on a 5x5x5, I'm doing pretty well! :)

I just got an average of 12:

1:36.17, 1:39.13, 1:35.01, 1:39.04, 1:29.91, 1:42.29, 1:35.21, (1:47.64), (1:27.36), 1:39.98, 1:36.61, 1:34.20

1:36.76. Not that great... I want to get that WR this weekend.

I really hope you get both single and average this weekend, Dan - I want to be there to see you do it!
