Hi, I'm new to the forums as you can see :P I just started doing rubik's cubes 2 days ago and I'm using the online beginner method and reaching an avg of about 1:30. Obviously way off compared to you guys, so I want to learnt he F2L technique, no online tutorials really make sense to me (not explained well). Can anyone explain this technique to me? Should I start this technique or train a little while?
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forums .. and your new addiction ;)

When I started learning F2L I found the 2 videos on the following page to be fantastic and is all you need to start intuitive F2L http://badmephisto.com/f2l.php, it explains the different types of cases and you should be able to instantly start solving F2L after watching them. Then its just practice and maybe reinforcing to learn some algs for some of the more complex cases or ones that take you longest to solve.

Best of luck.

Thanks, I just don't understand how to do F2L, I do every single algorithm and it doesn't work.. or I usually get them in the right place but one of each colour are on either sides.

hi, and welcome to the forums :D
that badmephisto video is a good way to start. as you get faster at f2l, you should try to find better ways to solve different cases and learn more f2l tricks. and if your down to about 20 sec. f2l i recommend you watch this playlist from the current WR-Holder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7h9g5fd7MSM&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL41EBC0B40C75103F
Happy Cubing :D

Can any1 say something about CN? i don't really know if it would help him if he tries to be, right away...

Hi Bray, welcome to the forums :) as this guy said, I have to talk to you about CN (wow I sound pro :P). CN actually is color neutral, which means that, you start the solve by using a cross of any colour, depending on which cross you think is the easiest to construct. That way, you can usually get really easy crosses (as you have 6 choices to select from), and things will be easier to plan. Many speedsolvers who are CN have started off being CN, and some of them are really fast - both Rowe and Feliks are CN.

The thing is, as many people have realised, the earlier into your cubing journey you switch to CN, the easier it is to adapt. Be warned: it is not as easy as you think. Quite a number of fast cubers (solving below 10~11 seconds on average) have made an attempt to switch, when they had already used fixed colors for ages. Very very few managed to actually adapt COMPLETELY. So they gave up. As Kirjava mentioned in this post, the benefits are small, ESPECIALLY if you choose to switch late in the game. It would be better to hone your skills in other areas. So, I would recommend you to start doing this, even though I personally use a fixed color cross. The benefits are small, but they still add up (if you can do it nearly perfectly, which you should if you started out with it), like Rowe mentioned in this vid. Hope I helped! :D

EDIT: tl;dr Go CN.

EDIT2: HAVE FUN CUBING! :)

EDIT3: If you don't understand what I am saying, don't worry, you will soon enough. Just make that decision, whether to go CN or not. :P if you want to, start by randomly building crosses on any colour then follow up with F2L. Idk whether this works, but try randomly choosing a color in your head right after scrambling. Then doit. :)

Thanks haha, I want to do F2L but it's so hard to know what to do even watching the videos. It is especially annoying having to skip back and forth between videos to see how to do what.

Use Badmephisto's tutorial. I was able to solve F2L almost instantly. Immediately, you will get slower, but after a couple of weeks, you will notice a difference in your times.

Don't worry, everyone starts off like that afaik. You may find it a pain to skip back and forth in videos and stuff but it's worth it, if you're really into cubing and want to get fast. (: You just need to learn up the notation (e.g. R', U, R', d', R', F', R2, U', x, y', z2), then you will find it easier.

Beginner looking for mentor

Hi, I'm learning F2L and I was thinking if anyone has skype they could possibly help me understand F2L without me constantly watching tutorials. It's fine if you don't have the time, I will just stick to the videos. If you're interested just either pm me or post in this thread thanks :)

I figured out the F2L method, and I'm solving in about 1:40+, but I've only been doing it for 2 days so I'll practice this for about 2 weeks :) thanks guys

You`re gonnna need way more than 2 weeks to master F2L. Although there should be a significant improvement after 2 weeks. Look-a-head is a great technique in F2L, but PLEASE don't bother that now. Focus on your F2L.

Hello everyone,

I've been cubing for about a year and I average little over a minute. I use a modified beginners' method to solve. I want to learn F2L but before I do so, are there any tips for decreasing my time using the beginners' method? I'm currently using a DaYan ZhanChi lubed with 50KWT differential oil (I lube it the same way as with Lubix). It turns and cuts corners well, but I still get pretty mediocre times with it. Any tips/tricks to improve my time?

Well we can't really give you anything with what you gave us other than basic stuff like practice, learn more LL algs (PLL, 2-look OLL, etc.) Check out the [wiki]keyhole[/wiki] page, it uses fewer moves than basic beginner's method and is a good stepping stone to f2l. Check the [wiki]f2l[/wiki] page on the wiki for more ways to solve cases when you do move on to f2l.

You'll need to type out an example solve so we can see how you solve.

Try this scramble - F2 U2 F L2 D2 B' L2 R2 D2 B2 R2 U' R' B' F2 D' F R F R' F'

Scramble with white on top and green in front, then write out your solution, and try to keep it neatly formatted, something like

Cross -
Corner1
2
3
4
Edge1
2
3
4
OLL
OLL
PLL
PLL

or whatever you use...

I'm getting 1:33.51, been using F2L for two days, is that alright? Or should I be practicing more?
