Ok,I've thought on this for a very long time and finally I'm making this thread.

I am a sub-30 solver whose been cubing for 5 months now. I use intuitive F2L,4LLL.

I check out a lot of fast cubing videos and I notice that fast cubers tend to use
Continuous flow > speedy, stop, speedy, stop. (Taken from How to be sub-20)
BUT! I also notice that some use what is known as slow turning which obviously gives better look ahead.By slow turning I mean like 2-3 moves per sec.

I tried both and my slow turning gave me better times. Heres my average on both(F2L only)

Slow Turning Ao5 :12.88
Speedy Turning Ao5: 14.55

When I do speedy turnings I still 'look ahead' but I often pause after doing a pair.
When I do slow turning I never pause but I cant go faster then 2-3 tps.

So the thing is which's better? I'm looking forward to my first sub-20 solves.

I'm also adding a poll :)

Turn slow during F2L and after awhile lookahead while come natural. LL you dont have to turn as slow since its the end of the solve. Especially during PLL. You also dont have to turn slow for your last F2L pair.
I picked learn Roux but if your nearing sub 20 theres no point in stopping for another method. Keep practicing.

Obviously slow Turing is better for F2L and is something I would suggest getting to be a habit. I wish I had made that choice because although I am somewhat fast it is because of my TPS during F2L. Regret not looking ahead because it is a bad habit.

I find it hard to do speedy turnings and still look ahead, maybe I've got to practise more.

Slow turning is certainly the way to go in my opinion. I have been cubing a year and always tried to follow that advise. Whilst you may be limited to 2-3 tps for now pauseless, practice will improve that. Is is often hard to find that 'sweet spot' where you are turning at a speed that is the maximum you can and retain full flow, especially when that speed is changing as you improve but if you keep practicing and trying to push that limit the times will come down.

Trust me, I have shocking tps, I suppose a by product of cubing in my 40's. I turn very very slowly in F2L. I average about 19 seconds, have a slow ~7-8s 2LLL and say a 2 second cross so I guess my F2L is about 10 seconds average.

In my opinion just keep at it and you will get there with the slow turning :)

The best way is to turn as fast as you can without pauses. In your case, you might consider it "slow," but with enough practice, you'll be able to turn fairly quickly without pauses.

I don't know, but a lot of (relatively) fast cubers I see do bursts of TPS (fast turning) then some really minor pauses to lookahead. I notice it in Andrew Ricci's videos, Rowe's videos, and some other guys as well. So I voted it, as I loveee this style =P. Sorry people :D

edit: I love this vid, his turning style, and all.

I WANNA BE LIKE THAT :(

Recently I have made an effort to reduce the pauses by turning slower and looking ahead and my times have dropped on average around 5 seconds. As others said, looking ahead and turning slower also leads to more precise turning. I wish i did this a while ago!

Picked 'Learn Roux' because in Roux, you dont need high TPS to get sub 15. When building blocks, you can turn veryy slow and still get very good times (Like sub 20). Unlike CFOP, you are restricted more, causing more moves, causing you need a higher turning speed in order to get sub 20 times.
This is why I choose Roux over CFOP.

i asked this same question on fb a little while ago, Rowe told me go slow and look ahead, and then that speedy turning just comes naturally, and that when he tries to turn fast, he gets a 15 second solve(which is really bad for him). So turn slow, and get a good look-ahead. Once you master look ahead, you will naturally begin to turn faster. I have really noticed this for OH. When I try to turn fast, I mess up and get 23s, but when I go slowly, I get 17s.

Slow turning should be the way to go. The only reason you're saying "Slow turning and lookahead" is because you NEED to turn slow in order to lookahead.

So all the slow turning is caused by the look a head. But if you improve you're lookahead, better recognition of practice, you don't need to turn slow in order to look ahead.
=Fast turning and look a head.
